4/14/18 - Uncommitted. 6-foot- 1, 200-pound frame. Large frame with strength throughout;build like a football player with wide shoulders and barreled chest. Compact, quick arm with plus ability to manipulate and control curveball. 7IP, 6H, 2R, 1BB, 9K; 0-3, RBI.Stands tall on mound with hands mid-chest; side step delivery where he moves from 3rd base side to 1 st base on rubber. Keeps hands at chest until legs starts to lead letting quick, compact arm stay hidden for a while before getting to mid-3/4 release point. Finishes rotationally around stiff front leg with better downhill plane on his pitches when he gets his chest out over the front leg. Very quick to home (1.1-1.2) from stretch and does an excellent job holding runners with quick picks accurately to the bag. Fastball has ability to run under hands of right-handed hitters and showed late life up in the zone; when going to glove side he had his best angle and could get the pitch to ride through the zone making hitters think it was a strike. Change-up was slightly below average with glove side sink off the fastball look. The pitch was generally straight, but was used down in the zone limiting damage; limited usage in outing. Slider is an above average pitch now, with flashes of being plus and dominant. Pitch had late action showing multiple shapes and different feel for the pitch. One version was two levels with 3/4 bite to the glove side and used late breaking movement off the plate for swings and misses. A second version looked more like a curveball with 12/6-downer action in late depth and could be thrown for strikes or add spin to have it breakthrough zone. Both versions of the pitch got lots of swings and miss and kept Burlingame uncomfortable and trying to hit the fastball early. Miller’s pace on the mound matched with his ability to sequence pitches and his above average command of the breaking ball was very impressive and would be a welcome addition for a bullpen or Sunday starts at the next level. Offensively Miller has a wide base with a pronounced load into his back hip. He utilizes a mid-level leg lift as timing and keeps his hands away from his body until he loads them straight back into the back shoulder. Swing has length with pull-centric approach. Teams looking for a late blooming pitcher with control for a put-away slider should take a second look at Miller; superb season with 3 complete games striking out 40 in 44.1 innings while issuing only 5 walks.
