The lesser-known among the two Stanford bullpen lefties, Dowd is the one I would select first in this year’s draft. The 6-foot-1 lefty touched 95 with his fastball while sitting 93-94. He also spun several hard hammers in the 79-82 mph range that spun into the 2800 rpm. Was a starter for the Cardinal last season before transitioning to the pen this year. With two above average pitches and feel for both a usable slider (83-85) and changeup (83), he’s likely to be developed as a starter in pro ball and is likely to be selected in the third-to-fourth rounds.

High-waist with lean build and projectability as he matures/strengthens; wider shoulder build with athleticism in core and long legs. Simple delivery from narrow start with high front knee and strong finish in extension down the mound; compact 3/4 arm with late quickness. FB 83-85 showing life at the plate and excellent angle; pounded the zone with pitch, working quickly and staying mainly glove-side. CB 70-75 showing 2-level depth and slow spin; 12-to-6 shape with ability to manipulate shape through the zone. Ability to go back-to-back for strikes and also early in the count. SLD 73-75 with late lateral glove side bite; times where he can get tight tilt on pitch and get to RHH back foot. Used pitch as his put away pitch getting swings and misses in game with the ability to sweep pitch off plate and under bat path. Showed flashes of plus control on all three pitches and tunneled all three pitches well keeping hitters off balance.

BAWS 2018 - Uncommitted. Lean and athletically built 5-foot-10 165-pound two-way player. One of top 2020 pitching prospects in Northern California. On mound up/down hands with mid knee in controlled delivery; compact arm showing quickness and looseness. Fastball 84-86 mph with angle into bottom half of zone. Slider 71-74 mph with late, under barrel 3/4-action and getting lots of swing and miss; controlled pitch to both sides of plate with late depth. Change-up 70-71 mph during warm ups only, showed flashes of sink. Balanced stance with even hands and high back elbow; strong barrel turn through zone with compact swing showing ability to control barrel to both sides of field. Very strong arm from outfield showing plus carry and life through cut man on way to plate; above average action in outfield as well. Slower feet down the line; 4.93 H-1^st.
