5/31/19

BAWS 2019 - Firm, medium frame with some strength in his wider shoulders and long lower half; agile feet with some speed (7.19 60yd). Tall, narrow stance with slightly opened base while keeping even hands away from the body; creates some momentum with hand pump as he uses quick front foot lift. Bat has an upward path with ability to show bat speed getting it through the zone with quick turns; showed backspin to the pullside and swing that can drive the ball with some loft. Lots of quality AB’s not chasing bad pitches with a patient approach and busting out of the box (4.38 H-1st). Strong range in OF covering into the gap and along fair territory well; really goes and gets the ball with consistent effort. During workout showed a compact arm with high release attacking the ball and keeping throws online with flashes of life (83 MPH); have also seen him play well at 2B/3B. Positive personality with team-first approach willing to do what he needs to do to help the team win; shows with his ability to play multiple positions while putting together quality AB’s.

4/06/19

V Live Oak Uncommitted. Medium frame with athleticism in build showing strength in upper half. Good footwork at 2B with more than enough arm to stick there; could play 3B/RF also. Quick bat with compact stroke drove a 2B into RF line after Sac Fly and 1B. Athletic on the bases getting good jumps stealing two bags. Table setter with versatility.

3/16/19

At Los Altos - Uncommitted. Started at 2B before moving to RF and showing athleticism at both positions with the arm profiling more to OF/3B than 2B. He’s a strong build with lean strength in the legs and hit atop the order for the Mustangs getting on base twice with a BB and HBP. Bat showed the ability to lift the ball, but couldn’t find his timing popping up twice; the bat flashes speed through the zone and had seen him during the summer really drive some balls through the gaps. Type of build and bat speed that can fit in as a UTL type player with footwork to stay in the infield and athleticism to play in the corner spots in the OF.

8/25/18 - PBR N CA Underclass Games - 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, strong build on compact frame, put together well with good proportions. Legs have some bow to them. Serious and intense player who just grows on a scout that bears down on him. Strength comes out in Matulich’s game, particularly with the bat where he’s got quick and strong hands and good barrel talent. There is some lift in the swing but not too much, will give him the ability to drive the ball into the gaps and over heads of outfielders who cheat in. Good hitting balance, starts with a narrow base with a rhythmic move toward the ball and good timing of his lower body and hands. Ball comes off his bat well and he has ability to compete with the bat beyond high school. Can grind at-bats and be a tough out vs good pitching. Runs well enough on the bases, good instincts and aggressiveness, though near average running speed is the best he could be. Defensively we’ve seen him play outfield and infield (during the spring), took reps in outfield in the showcase. Arm plays well and there may be more in there but the footwork to the ball and as he throws will have to smooth out. Frankly would think 3rd base might be a spot for him. In any case, this is a good baseball player who comes to play.

7/27/18 @ NCTB underclass tourney - Showed raw power and bat speed.  The delivery of his swing is unorthodox, but the tools are clearly there.  Swings the bat with intent to do damage.  Plays hard. Looks the part.

7/19/18 @ NCTB Upperclass Tourney - Has good gap to gap power. Overall has a powerful swing with good pop off the barrel. Can work a little more on his defense to develop his overall ability of a player. Final impression is that he has bat talent and a chance to develop as either a corner outfielder or 2nd/3rd baseman.

6/1/18 - 6/3/18 @ BAWS 2018 - Strong and compactly put together at 5-foot-10 167-pounds. Wide stance with low hands and heavy leg lift for timing; quick stroke with compact swing and excellent barrel control into zone. Ability to stay loaded and drive fastball into the opposite field gap. Compact arm from outfield that plays up in the infield; times where ball cuts out of hand making throws inaccurate. Average runner showing fluid stride; 4.63 Home-1st. Good young player with a good motor for the game, highly competitive.
