Notes

Comments

7/16/21

Body: 6-1, 164-pounds. Lanky build with some lean strength. Athletic mover.
Delivery: Repeatable and efficient mechanics. Rhythmic mover as he syncs hands with his higher knee tuck. Sinks into his back leg while staying engaged with his back hip. Stays over the rubber well. Balanced and firm lead leg block at landing and finishes in a good fielding position.
Arm Action: RH. Compact circle that isn't too long in the back. Good arm speed that accelerates into release. Decent layback. 3 innings of work and gave up 1R with 4ks.
FB: T90, 87-89 mph. Decent spin that sat around 2200-2300. Really came out the hand clean and had some sneaky late velo.
CB: 74-76 mph. Almost true 12/6. Located low in the zone. 6:45 tilt.
CH: 78-80 mph. Only threw 2 in the outing but showed major arm side run/fade with HB break at 16.9 inches.

7/11/21

Delivery: Efficient mover throughout his delivery. Side steps into a higher knee tuck that gets him into his back hip. Stays balanced over back rubber. Gets engaged with that back hip and rides it down the mound. Uses lower half well especially back leg. Linear mover. Gets good direction toward home. Compact arm circle that stays connected to his body. Stays hidden behind body. Accelerates late in the action. Gets good layback. Gets to release out of the H ¾ slot.

FB: Decent spin for velo. Gets some extra perceived velo with extension at 6.79 ft which is above MLB level. Good location to all quadrants.

CB: Slurvy break due to present horizontal movement. Didn’t locate it the best but each one was competitive.

CH: Higher spin CH. Consistent armspeed. Helps give it some more armside run than downward fade. Decent pitch throwing it off the FB.

6/16/21

Area Code Tryout - UC Santa Barbara commit; Lean lithe body type, sinewy with strength, rhythmic delivery, quick arm, has feel of three pitches and ability to make pitches with each, FB 86-88 seems quicker due to quality delivery and extension, tight spinning CB (73-75) with late bite, CHG (79-81) down in zone with arm side action running down off the FB look.

6/08/21

Tall, lanky build, committed to UC Santa Barbara, 6-foot-1 frame, stands tall with presence on the mound. He seemed to study the hitters with intent to make each pitch matter.

Delivery: Staring at the long frame, the first thing to notice is his long legs. He stands completely upright with his feet together on the center of the rubber. Hands are high in front of face, and the first move draws his hands to mid-section to get in unison with his pick-up leg. Using his long legs as leverage to get into the back side, he stays balanced over the rubber waiting for separation which is quick and straight up to the ear. There is no wasted movement from leg up to leg down, and his throwing arm is in a good position to release. With the quick arm action, his fastball will sneak up on hitters, and his control of all three pitches will make him a quality pitcher now with a high ceiling.

FB: Sitting around 88 mph, the fastball was able to sneak up on hitters. Late life through the strike zone makes it tough for hitters to get clean contact.

CB: Staying on top of the curveball made for a clean 12-6 break as well as getting downhill, the curveball was used for command and swing and misses.

CH: With a difference of 9-10 mph on his change-up, he used a traditional circle change grip to get late movement and get hitters off balance early in counts.

Summary: Quick arm, lean body, and command of all pitches confirms what earned him an early DI commit opportunity. Getting ahead of hitters was important in his approach, so he can use his three-pitch mix as well as working backwards to hitters at times.

8/17/19

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Long, large frame with width in the shoulders and very lean muscle build; projects to continue to add strength and take big jumps. Showed the tools to be a future D1 RHP on the mound even without his best outing. Went two innings striking out 1, giving up 1 hit and walking 4. The control wasn’t it’s best, but the overall athleticism and ability to have the ball come out of his hand firm and clean were very impressive. Hands lift high with slight turn and coil around firm back leg riding out the back hip well and landing with loose hips on a firm front side; became over-rotational to 1st during the outing. Arm produces late speed with length out of the glove to 3/4 release; loose and easy arm that stays hidden behind his body through delivery. FB 83-86 with run and cut; live FB through the zone showing life up through zone. CB 66-69 with 3/4 slurvy break; late bend with depth occurring at the plate and flashing tight and hard. CHG 72 with arm side run; limited usage but chance to be a solid 3rd pitch. Showed athleticism in the field playing on the left side and showing the ability to stick there. At the plate barrel shows some upwards length with hands dropping down on load; best swings show flatter barrel path with hands being more in time with hips. Overall an athletic 2022 player who has the tools to keep improving and should be a follow.

7/07/19

CCB World Series - Long, tight frame with a high waist and length in the lower half, Moring is very projectable as a player showing tools on the mound and in the field. On the hill, Moring moves fluidly down the hill with a slight back turn and high front knee allowing his loose arm to move quickly to 3/4 release. The FB 80-83 showed late life at the plate and ability to work the bottom half of the zone. The CHG (69-73) was extremely heavy, dying about halfway to home and flashing some run; pitch has a high ceiling. CB 66-67 11/4 with late cutting sweep in it’s depth; another pitch that projects well. Defensively he made plays all weekend at 3B showing the ability to cut angles and the arm to stick on the left side of the infield. His bat is compact with tight hands having some extra pre-swing movement; when he cuts it down he showed he could create hard contact through the middle of the field. Moring is a player I haven’t seen yet and came away very impressed.
