4/17/19

vs Oakmont HS at Fresno Easter Classic - San Diego State commit; threw an excellent game, fastball as 86-88, held velocity througout, utilized 72-74 mph curveball enough to let hitters know he trusts it, smooth break with two plane break, change-up is a good pitch and usable pitch at 73-75 mph. Strong lean athletic body type, repeated delivery, arm works, seems to throw with fairly easy arm action and effort suggesting velocity can creep into low 90s at the college level. Classic three pitch left-hander with good fastball/change-up combo and a developing breaking ball. Went 0-2 with a pair of walks at the plate, there is no doubt raw power present though ability to cut down the swing and be a hitter doesn't show up often.

4/16/19

Fresno Easter Classic - SDSU Commit. Long, large frame with length in lower half and space in frame to keep adding. Showed off quick hands and late barrel speed turning on FB over RCF wall; ball took off on impact with continual carry. Hit another hard ball to RF in 3rd AB that was just a bit in front of. Good frame at 1B with good feet around the bag.

3/01/19

vs Franklin HS - San Diego State signee, he was the standout performer on this night was without a doubt. Fondtain is not an unknown by any means, but the SDSU signee took a step forward that will have scouts paying attention to him maybe a bit more than they had previously planned. He's got a prototypical body type, long and strong and as I watched him pitch I kept having images of Jon Lester run through my mind, as it relates to his athleticism and delivery and hint of similar repertoire. He was up to 89 mph in each of his 5 innings of work so the velocity spike wasn't just a blip on the radar. His earlier outings weren't quite as good this spring so this was a great outing to get back on track. He mixed in an improving curveball that has lateral plane and some slurve action to it (74-76 mph) and comfortably utilized his change-up (72-76 mph). Occasionally pushed that pitch but for the most part it was solid. The fastball life was what stood out, as hitters seemed to be WAY tardy. Threw 65 pitches through 5 IP, 8 K, H, BB. That was all he allowed and the hit was a ball that got banged through the left side. There was a runner on 1st who had reached on an error and he paid a little too much attention to the runner and got a little lazy with location. That was the only knock. For good measure he also hit in the 3-hole for the Bears, going 1-for-3 and also reached on an E4 (official score might have given him a hit and RBI, but it was a hard hit ball right at the 2nd baseman, a play that should have been made).

7/13/18

USA PDP workout Stockton (CA) - San Diego State commit. Big pro type body, two-way talent and looks to have abilities to contribute at D1 level both ways. Raw power displayed during BP round was awe-inspiring. Easy loft power and balls landing well beyond the wall at Banner Island Ballpark (home of Stockton Ports of Cal League). Minimal stride, little move of heel up and heel down for timing. Gets exceptional separation of hands from body through extension, keeps hands back really well and stays behind the ball. Keeps away from body throughout swing somewhat like A's Matt Olson. There is quite a bit going on in his swing and approach but he found the barrel repeatedly and displayed raw home run power. Soft hands at 1st base, above average arm, light feet. On mound has high-3/4 slot that is quite close to overhand, on-line delivery, good lower body stability and usage though does give a little bit at the plant and could firm up for more leverage, showed solid pitchability with fastball that was up to 88 mph, uses curveball enough but seems to know it's just a show pitch to get back to his fastball. Worked fastball/change-up combo well, particularly good going in and out with the fastball. Some late tail/sink vs left-handed hitters. Curveball a bit loose with short action and rolling break. Four batter outing (6-3 broken bat at 87, 4-3 FB, E6 left on left, F4 change-up).
