6/20/18

6-foot-2, 220 pounds, thick lower half, good strength, broad back and shoulders, average proportions. Ran a 7.56 sixty yard dash. Size indicates there should be power potential to tap into down the road. Heavy rotational swing. Swing starts from a slightly open stance with some inversion in the lead leg, planting early after a minor kick. Hands work loosely from around the shoulders. Bat path has some loft to it, can get a little uphill at times. His tee exit velocity was measured at 84 MPH during this event. Working out at first base, Joy was clocked up to 66 MPH on throws across the diamond, working from a ¾ to high ¾ slot. Actions can be a little slow at the position, including with the arm. Quickening them should be the next step in his development. Solid glove comfortable making plays around the bag and handling scoops at the position. Also working out as a right-handed pitcher, the hands start high before dropping to the belt. Simple mechanics with a high leg kick, average extension down the mound. Joy’s three pitch mix include a fastball, curveball, and changeup. The fastball sits between 69-73 MPH. The curveball, which featured a 12/6 shape to the break, came in between 61-66 MPH, with the best ones at the higher end of the velocity spectrum, showing sharper break. The changeup came in firm at 66 MPH. Future is likely as a position player, with burgeoning game power giving him a shot to become a middle of the order bat.
