2021 MLB DraftWinkel led the 2019 Huskies in home runs (7) as a true freshman before missing the 2020 season with Tommy John surgery. The 6-foot-1, 198-pound left-handed hitter is the rare offensive catcher with strong defensive chops. He finished 2021 at .284/.357/.525 with 11 home runs, 14 doubles and just 30 strikeouts in 53 games.

Uconn Recruit: 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame, athletic build, wiry strong, with plenty of room to fill out. Ranked second in New England, a left-handed hitting catcher, scouts dream. Offensively, it’s a simple approach, slightly open stance, balanced throughout the swing. The hands are loose and really work. He made solid contact, driving the ball from gap-to-gap. He generates advanced bat speed and his tee exit velocity was 93 mph. Defensively, a top level defender, the setup is balanced and relaxed. Mechanically is sound, has soft hands and gets out of the chute quick and is in a straight line to second. Clocked at 80 mph from the crouch, the arm is short, quick and on time with everything. Pop times of 1.89-1.97, on the bag. The glove front side could stay firmer. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash, moves very well for a catcher, athletic, good flexibility. Should be a high draft in two years

A left-handed hitter, the stance is even and balanced. The hands are set right above the shoulders. The stride is simple, keeps the hands back and is on time when he makes contact.  Shows plus pop to all fields for his age. Behind the dish, the set up is balanced, hands are strong and can really stick a pitch. Footwork is solid, no wasted movement.  The arm has good carry and is on the bag.  The sky is the limit for this kid.
