Cape Cod: PITCHER- A two-way talent for the Cougars and Cotuit, Mathis followed a strong 2023 in Charleston (5-1, 3.45 ERA, 60 IP, 60 H, 17 BB, 52 SO) with an equally impressive summer on the mound. Boasting a fastball dominant arsenal, he struck 23 in 20.1 innings. It’s a heater that touches 96 and sits 92-94 with good jump out of his hand. He also spun two different breaking balls, with the slider flashing average at 85-86 mph. It’s a sharp breaker and a finishing pitch. He will also show a slower version as an early count, strike-stealer.
HITTER- The two-way talent showed a low effort swing with a small load, and a late, short stride that produced above average power. His swing lacked fluidity, but the results speak for themselves (.318/.381/.667). The right-handed hitter also slugged 11 home runs which placed him second in the league while his SLG% was tops in the league. He crushes fastballs and survives against offspeed, typically fighting off the soft stuff and getting to the next pitch. His strikeout rate was just 17% which is in line with the 15% he posted this spring for the Cougars. Built strong and athletic at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Mathis is a very well-rounded hitter and has positioned himself as one of the top mid-major draft prospects for next summer.
