2/15/20: One of the standout players at the Angels College Classic over the weekend was Pepperdine’s Wyatt Young. Young is a 5-foot-7, 180-pounder, who won’t stand out from a physical standpoint. But for what he lacks in terms of size he more than makes up with his impressive skill set. He reminds me a little of former Louisiana shortstop and third round pick Blake Trahan. Trahan was a hair taller at 5-foot-9, but Young is thicker. Young, just like Trahan has outstanding instincts at shortstop and beautifully turned several double plays. He makes every play look relatively routine. His arm didn’t stand out to me, but you could say the same thing for Trahan. He didn’t have elite arm strength, but did possess elite accuracy across the diamond. Young isn’t going to blow you away as a hitter, but he does hit for an average and goes to the plate with a specific plan. Power is lacking, but contact and get on base ability is not. (Rogers)

8/14/19: The diminutive middle infielder fell just shy of the league batting title, finishing seven points behind Orleans OF Max Troiani’s .345 mark, slashing .338/.416/.446 over 39 games and 149 plate appearances. Listed at 5-foot-7, 165 pounds, Young doesn’t bring much raw power to the plate, though he shows good feel for the barrel from the left side and strong bat-to-ball skills to go with a solid feel for the zone. He does a good job of keeping the barrel on plane with a low load and quick launch with solid acceleration through contact. He’s capable of driving the pull side gap at present and should develop into a more consistent doubles threat as he continues to mature physically. Defensively, Young shows the footwork, hands and arm necessary to develop into an above-average defender at second base. After slashing .313/.350/.364 as a true freshman for Pepperdine this spring, Young improved on both his on-base and power numbers this summer and will continue to focus on building out that portion of his offensive profile when back on campus. He projects as a mid-Day Two target at present. (Faleris)
