With hesitation added to his delivery since my look last fall at the 2019 Puma Classic, the 6-foot-5 transfer from John A. Logan JC has also begun to fill out in his once lanky frame. Although the pause for greater deception has removed some fluid athleticism from his delivery, Hoffmann’s stuff remains. His heater tops at 93 mph, mostly sitting 90-92 with spin rates into the 2400s from a high three-quarter slot. On this look his slider was his best pitch, thrown consistently for strikes in the low-80s. The pitch played above average. Another above average offering is his low-spin changeup and he’s also added a curve ball since last fall to complete his four-pitch arsenal. Super competitive, Hoffmann has always performed. As a freshman starter at Oakland University (Mich.) in 2019 he struck out 46 in 56 IP then dominated the Northwoods League that summer, going 8-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 58 IP. With another strong season this spring to add to his resume, look for Hoffmann to be considered during Day Two this July.

9/16/19

Long bodied at 6-foot-5, 185 pounds, Hoffmann showed an athletic delivery with a loose arm from a high three-quarter slot. He featured a cutting 89-91 mph fastball and above average sinking changeup (1400-1500 rpm) at 78-80 mph. He also mixed in an above average slider at 75-77 mph to complete his three-pitch arsenal during his one inning of work. Was a weekend starter at Oakland University last spring and went 8-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 58 IP in the Northwoods League this past summer. Hoffmann has committed to the University of Illinois for next year.

4/19/18

Oakland commit. 6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, long lanky frame, slender build. Delivery is under control and balanced, easy effort, high front side and long levers. Arm action has length, loose and easy, high ¾ slot. Showed ability to command his fastball, worked both sides of the plate at times, command potential is there, slight arm side action, sat 85-86, touched 87 early. Curveball has feel, was able to drop for strikes in any count, 72-74 mph, rarely expanded for strikeouts. Flashed sinking changeup with armside action, rarely used. Final line - 5IP, 6H, 2K, 2BB.
