6/8/15 - 6-foot-2, 182-pound right-handed pitcher impressed in 5.1 innings of work, allowing only four hits, while striking out four. Works from a short, quick, high ¾ arm action, arm swings sweeps behind back slightly, repeats delivery well, foot stays below knee at balance point, stride direction stays in line with home plate. Fastball sat 82-85 mph throughout outing, touching 86 once. 70-73 mph changeup is out pitch (all four strikeouts recorded with change), and has the ability to cut it or sink it to his arm side. Change to glove side actually had slider tilt, and didn’t realize until after the game upon talking with his father, Providence’s pitching coach Chris Carlsen. Carlsen will attend Maryville (MO) in the fall of next year to continue his baseball career.
Carlsen is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound two-way player who showed best on the mound. Demonstrating a smooth, relaxed rhythm on the mound, Carlsen showed easy effort in all of his pitches. Carlsen showed good mechanics in his delivery, which featured a loose back arm action and hand acceleration. He showed feel for three pitches, a fastball (67-71 mph) with arm side run, a cutter (61-65 mph) that has late sharp break, and a changeup (66-69 mph) that showed sink when down in the zone. Defensively, Carlsen is a corner infielder who showed sound footwork around the bag and an accurate arm (67 mph).
