5/25/13 - Illinois commit. 6-foot-1, 170-pound right handed pitcher, slender build, frame has projection. Shows a high level of pitchability, excellent three pitch velocity splits, mixes his pitches well, shows control of all three pitches. Fastball sat at 83-85 mph, touched 87 in the first inning, showed arm side run and solid control. Breaking ball has slurve action, 66-68 mph, shows control, fastball arm action. Showed a changeup at 72-74 mph with sink and control. James three pitch arsenal shows command and the ability to keep hitters off balance, his splits between pitches give a solid mix of velocity to keep hitters off balance.

Committed to the University of Illinois in February of his junior year.
James earned PBR second-team All-State honors as a sophomore after he posted a 9-1 record, which included six shutouts and one no-hitter. He finished with a 0.62 ERA, striking out 107 to 8 walks in 67.1 innings. ...
Everything the 6-foot-1, 160-pound James does on the field is smooth and easy. A natural two-way, top-level prospect, James has a clean, balanced left-handed swing with excellent mechanics. James has a gap-to-gap approach and should develop a lot more power as he physically develops. Defensively, he has top-level hands and has smooth defensive actions, to go along with a solid arm (80 mph). On the mound, James is very interesting, as he has an extraordinarily fluid arm, clean mechanics and commands three pitches for strikes, all coming out of the same window. His fastball topped at 81 mph, while his curveball had 12/6 break. His changeup looks to be a strong out-pitch as well.
James appears to be one of premier Class of 2013 prospects we've seen in the state. James showed to be a legitimate two-way prospect, one that will make an impact as a position player and as a pitcher. A left-handed hitting shortstop, James has a compact, mechanically sound swing and displayed the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Defensively, he is tremendously smooth with advanced infield actions to go along with solid arm strength. Still physically developing, James also impressed on the mound, where he showcased feel for three pitches, a clean arm swing and acceleration through the ball. His fastball topped at an effortless 82 mph, and his changeup has the potential to be a plus out-pitch.
