2/16/15 - Mehlin is an athletic-framed 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-hand hitting third baseman and right-handed pitcher. Class of 2016 prospect that attends Blue Valley Northwest HS in Kansas. Athletic set-up at the plate, light stride, no load, short path to the ball, hand strength, bat speed, aggressive swing, repeats. Impressive round of batting practice with a series of hard hit line drives in the middle of the field. Swing built to hit for high average. Exit velocity 86 mph, ran a 4.38 home-to-first. During infield work showed athletic actions, soft hands, quick exchanges, quick high three-quarters arm action, accurate throws. Simple delivery on the mound, tall balance point, high three-quarters arm action, arm works, athletic finish, repeats. Fastball with arm side run, also squared up catcher with glove side black fastball, 78-80 mph, topped out at 82, high percentage of strikes. Controllable breaking ball, nearly automatic strike, 12/6 action, 66-70 mph. Change-up at knees, 70-72 mph.
6/18/14 - Mehlin is a strong, athletic 6-foot, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. He features a simple delivery, body control and throws with an over-the-top arm slot. His fastball was clocked between 80-81 mph, most with arm side run. He throws a 12/6 breaking ball at 62-66 and 71-72 change-up with sinking action to it. In the game Mehlin struck out three out of the five batters he faced.
6/18/14 - Mehlin is an athletic-framed 6-foot, 170-pound right-hand hitting third baseman. During infield evaluations his hands and feet worked and he threw with quick, clean three-quarters arm action. His top throw was clocked at 80 mph. At the plate, he has a tall, athletic set-up and slightly open stance. His hand load is short and he strides inline. Mehlin has a simple swing, bat speed, maintains balance throughout and finishes with extension – his strong hands work well and he has a gap-to-gap approach. His exit velocity high was 88 mph, one of the top marks in camp. Mehlin reached base four times in the games, including three hits. He ran a 4.38 home-to-1B from the right side. Mehlin is more physical and has made across the board improvements since we saw him in the winter.
1/4/14 - The wide-shouldered, athletic-framed 6-foot, 165-pound Mehlin throws from a high ¾ slot with easy, clean arm action. His fastball was clocked at 78-80 mph - this is up from the 74-76 we had seen him at earlier in the fall - so he is trending in the right direction. He showed body control throughout his delivery and command of a 12-6 curveball in the 64-65 mph range. He also threw a 68-70 change-up in the strike zone consistently. With his athleticism and arm action don’t be surprised if a mid-80’s fastball appears sooner rather than later.
1/4/14 - Mehlin is a 6-foot, 165-pound athletic right-hand hitting infielder. During the infield workouts he showed soft hands and quick footwork – overall good actions. He threw with quick, clean arm action from a ¾ slot making accurate throws, topping out at 75 mph. At the plate, Mehlin starts with a balanced set up and strides inline. He has no hand load and demonstrated good balance as well as extension through the baseball. He has a simple, yet strong middle of the field approach. His exit velocity was clocked at 82 mph.
