Maryland Top Prospect Games West
Body: 6’1’’, 185 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate with a leg kick load creating nice hand separation. Fluid, uphill swing with strong lower half involvement. Gets the barrel on plane early and is short to the ball with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball with balance throughout the swing and gets great extension through contact with a strong two-handed finish. Gap-to-gap approach.
Power: 90 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Present power to the alleys with more projected.
Arm: RH. INF - 78 mph. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarter slot.
Defense: Plays through the ball with quick, active feet. Fields it out in front of his body with a quick exchange from the glove to the hand. Moves well laterally with a strong, solid base at set-up.
Run: 7.89 60-yard time.
Delivery: Side-step wind-up and high leg kick to a tall, compact balance point. Long, kick-out stride down the mound with some uphill shoulder tilt. Lands in-line with the plate with some lower half drive off the rubber. Gets over the front side with extension and a full athletic finish.
Arm Action: RH. Throws downhill with long arm action over the top and creates some arm speed through release.
FB: T78 mph, 76-78 mph. Average spin rate of 1896 rpm per Trackman.
CB: 60-64 mph. Gradual 12/6 shape with an average spin rate of 1986 rpm per TrackMan.
CH: 70-71 mph.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Championships
Athey is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. At the plate, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, big leg kick stride on line, loads back. Short to ball stays inside with a quick bat, works uphill through contact and is strong at contact point with extension through the ball. On the mound, throws from an over the top arm slot with a short, quick free arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands slightly closed with a bit of fall off in his finish. Fastball was 76-79, touching 80, with a bit of late life. Showed a change-up with some armspeed that was 70-71. Also threw a curveball with gradual 12/6 break that was 58-61.
