2/22/14
6-foot-4, 215 pounds two way prospect. Athletic body. Has dealt with some minor arm issues, so he worked out as a catcher at the All-State Showcase. Behind the plate, he throws through a 3/4 slot with short/loose arm action. Features plus arm speed, and technically clean footwork. At the plate, the right handed hitter uses a slightly open setup with short stride. Offers some plus power with good size. Slightly uphill bat path also showed linedrive ability. Reached a top exit velocity of 83 mph.
3.2.13
Bain has a big 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame that has room to fill out. He shows a good, quick arm. Behind the plate he registered 2.01-2.16 pop times. He gained ground well. At the plate, he had a good setup and was balanced. He lifts the baseball and creates backspin. Was willing to go the the opposite field.
Bain has some definite upside on the mound. He has an advanced feel for three pitches compared to many of his peers. His arm action was clean and easy. His delivery was repeatable and he threw plenty of strikes. Velo was only 78 mph on this day but should add more down the road. His breaking ball has good bite and he has good feel for it at his age. It registered between 66-68mph. Bain will be one that we follow throughout the next few months.
7-12-2018:At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, Bain has a wide, physically mature frame. Proportionally built between his upper and lower half. Limited projection left. For his size, the actions are fluid and he shows good body control while working down the slope. Good tempo to his delivery. Drop and drive type of delivery that creates leverage from a high 3/4 release. Slight stabbing motion in his arm action but doesn’t wrap or get too long on his backside. Strong lead leg allows him to get over his front side consistently. Balanced finish with good extension. Dominant 1 inning of work. Struck out all 3 hitters he faced. FB sat between 90-92 with heavy life. Relatively straight but has good downward plane. Gets on hitters quickly. Flashed 2 secondary pitches in brief appearance. First offering was a firm slider at 85-86 with late cutting action as it got to the zone. Not a lot of depth to the pitch and it backed up a few times. Also showed an 11/5 CB that ranged from 76-78. Showed consistent shape and better depth than his slider. Kept everything around the zone. Primarily starting this summer but might profile better to a bullpen role. (Dan Jurik)
