5/16/18 - Quintessential leadoff profile, stands out most for his plate discipline. Artis is an analytics darling with 158 walks and just 100 strikeouts over the course of his career. Constantly works deep counts and excels at hitting with two strikes. Compact frame with a strong lower half, lacks projection but has strength to the gaps. Left-handed hitter with a low crouch and plenty of pre-pitch movement, including an exaggerated bat waggle to generate rhythm. Starts hands low and then then whips his hands through the zone. Line-drive hitter with solid bat speed. On this look, he squared up two hard line drives to the pull side, one of them for a single. Also stole second base standing up and was picked off trying to steal third — a rare mistake on the basepaths for Artis, an efficient, intelligent base stealer with 68 career steals in 80 attempts. Did not get any home-to-first times on this look, but Artis has a reputation as at least an above-average runner. His instincts make his speed play up in the outfield, where he gets great jumps and takes efficient routes, as he showed with a diving catch on a sinking, slicing line drive in front of him and to his right. Arm plays in center field, and his instincts give him a chance to stick at the position in pro ball.

5/2/18 - Compact frame with strong lower half. Crouched stance at the plate with wiggle in the barrel. Shorter swing path with above average bat speed and shows barrel control. Ability to spray the field in batting practice. Leadoff type hitter who knows his game and doesn’t overdo it. Liked how his hands worked. Battles at the plate (41 BB / 5 HBP / 30 K). Works counts, feel for strike zone. Hitter who can run, not just a speedster. Quick out the box, was 4.39 on the turn on a double that should have been a routine single to right-of-center but had second on his mind at contact. Was 2-for-4 on the day with a walk. Showed range in the outfield and quick first step. Average arm strength with quick release.
