Conover

Six-foot-5 right-hander with a low three-quarter release point and sling arm action, Conover sailed through the Northwestern lineup with seven innings of one-run, four-hit ball. With more control than command he struck out nine and walked three with a sinking fastball that sat in the 92-93 mph range and touched 95. He also mixed a 84-85 mph slider that was best to his gloveside and subtracted some velo which added a little more depth to a hybrid breaker at 81-82. For the season Conover has struck out 57 in 47.2 innings while holding opponents to a .190 batting average and a 59% ground ball rate. His future role is most likely out of the bullpen where he can just let his sinker dive and his slider rip. He’s likely to be selected in the middle of Day Two.

Cape Cod: Conover was drafted in the 20th round by the Tigers after his sophomore year at Seton Hall, but elected to transfer to Rutgers rather than sign. He boosted his stock in a big way this summer, posting a 1.50 ERA and striking out 18 against five walks in 18 innings as Harwich's closer. We saw him sit 93-95 with above-average spin rates in the 2380-2500 rpm range, and Harwich head coach Steve Englert said he got as high as 97 mph this summer. He also has a true swing-and-miss weapon in his sharp 82-83 slider with tight spin in the 2850-3000rpm range. Long, lanky at broad at 6-5, 190 pounds, Conover has some funk in his low three-quarters arm slot, and his fastball bores in on righthanded hitters with tough angle. He has good feel to locate in and out, and he stayed in attack mode and maintained his composure very well all summer. He has a chance to make a huge leap in the draft as a junior next year.

Futures Preview North- Lanky build at 6-foot-3, 155-pounds. A tall right handed pitcher and catcher. Defensively he had a catchers pop time of 2.09-2.2 seconds while running a 7.68 second 60 yard dash.  As a catcher Conover showcased a 75 MPH velocity to second base. At the plate, Conover had a balanced slappy swing that showed ability to go to opposite field. Short stride and long arms. Off the mound, he showed a long, high ¾ release point with fastball that was consistently 77-78 MPH topping out at  79 MPH. Curveball had gradual break while having a velocity of 60-65 MPH.
