Winter Trials South (January 30, 2016)
Perry checks in at a filled out 5-foot-8 180 pounds. He ran 4.38 home-to-1B. Offensively- Perry starts in a balanced stance with his feet outside his shoulders and a hand position even with back shoulder, bat at a 45 degree angle. Creates separation with an aggressive yet controlled load straight back and uses an up-down down stride to complete his timing. Slides weight slightly forward into contact, staying closed. Swing path can be stiff at times working around the shoulders with a short finish. Contact was solid and mostly groundballs/line drives through the middle to his pull side. Exit velocity was 86 MPH. Defensively- Perry has the prototypical low to the ground approach for 3B, active with his feet and can cover some ground laterally and forward. Has a slight stutter step with first move but breaksdown well into the ball, quick transfer and uses shuffle step to gain ground. Infield velocity was 71 MPH but as demonstrated on the mound, there's plenty in the tank. Possible 2B/3B projection over the long term. Pitching- On the mound Perry works with a quick pace, using a short rocker step initially, driving up to a belt high balance point, sealed off to the plate. Covers some ground with his stride, staying closed and working up and over his front side with a high 3/4 slot. Would like to see additional extension out in front. FB sat 78-79 MPH working downhill. Change up was 71-72 MPH and around the plate while curveball demonstrated right-to-left sweep at 66-68 MPH, occasionally with early action due to casting out his release. Good feel on the bump and positionally for this 2018 RHP.
