WNY All-Star Games (September 24, 2017)
November 6, 2016

Von Holten, a 2019 right-handed hitting third baseman/RHP, stands at  6-foot-0 and weighs 215 pounds.  Offensively- Starts with a an open lower half with a slight shift of weight on the back leg with the hand in front of the back shoulder while the barrel of the bat perpendicular to the ground. Gets into the launch phase of the swing with a slight lift and stride of the lead foot towards the pitcher toe slightly open while the hands are loaded above and off the back shoulder. During batting practice, stayed to the pull side of the field keeping the ball from the foul line to the pull side gap. Has recorded an exit velocity as high as 86 MPH, with more potential if the lead hip could stay in a bit longer helping create better extension thru the ball. Defensively-  Gets the body moving pre pitch with a right left prep step. Moves the ball aggressively with quality body control, but fields the ball a bit deep into the body with both knees outward creating a bit of an unathletic positioning when fielding the ball, rebounding well with a quick transfer keeping the upper and lower in a proper sequence which helped create an arm velocity of 76 MPH. Pitching- Starts from the third base side of the rubber with the hands settled at the waist. Gets into the gathered position with a moderate step towards the first base line while the pivot foot, with a stutter step, gets to the center of the rubber with the hands staying waist height and the lead knee lifts above the waist with a slight inward rotation of the hips. Sticks the landing with the lead toe slightly open, gets quality leg drive with a good toe drag with quality extension on release. The fastball, thrown from a low to mid ¾ arm slot, topped out at 79 MPH, a personal best, showing arm side run as well as some sink. The changeup showed good depth and quality rotation with arm side sink topping out 63 MPH which was a quality differential from the fastball. The curveball, topping out at 64 MPH, showed tight spin with 12-to-5 shape.

 Preseason All-State (February 28, 2016)
M atthew checks in at 5-foot-10 175 pounds with a filled out lower half. The 3B/RHP ran a 8.11 60 and a 4.46 home-to-1B. Offensively- Matt sets up in an even stance with his hands up and off his back shoulder with a 30 degree bat angle. Drops hands slightly when taking back, flattening out his barrel and uses an up-down stride, landing open. Keeps weight back well and is aggressive with lower half. Barrel stays flat through the zone with line drive/middle of the field results. Improved exit velocity, up to 86 MPH from 82 MPH in November. Defensively- As an infielder (3B) Matt starts with an upper body lean and toes pointed outward. Aggressive with approach but can sit back on his heels when fielding. Some start and stop movements once he receives the ball, causing a delay in his release. A younger player, that will need some refinement here. Like the activity with his feet and the angles he creates. Arm strength peaked at 71 MPH which is also up from his 68 MPH in November. Pitching- On the mound Matthew works from his arm side using a short side step up to a belt high leg drive. Hand position starts and stays at the belt, eliminating any downward building of arm speed (first move is out and up). Lands open and on heel with his body decelerating early. Arm works through a low 3/4 slot with some arm side action to his FB which sat 72-73 MPH. Hand stayed under his breaking ball causing early action. When on top it featured more of a 1-to-7 shape. Good overall pitchers frame with a beneficial arm slot, young enough player to make necessary adjustments to help him reach his ceiling on the mound.
Last Chance Preview (November 29, 2015)
VonHolten stands a thick 5-foot-10, 175-pounds. Offensively- At the plate he starts with a shoulder width apart stance, hands relaxed head level, weight slightly shifted to his back side. Uses a slight leg lift and stride for timing, back load, longer path to the ball, barrel works slightly uphill, with a one arm finish shoulder high. Respectable exit velocity of 82 MPH velocity for a young player. Defensively- Matthew fields from a wide base slightly deep in the stance, glove-hand transfer is clean with an arm action that gets high quick. Throws from a high 3/4-slot, upright through his footwork and into his finish. 68 MPH across the diamond.  Pitching- On the mound he uses a smooth slower paced delivery, breaks his hands at his belt to a long hooking arm action, before release his hand gets inside his head. Throws from a mid 3/4 slot in a strong power position, lacks a strong finish. Trying a more aggressive finish getting over his front side would help. FB 72-74 MPH, CB 59-62 with some 1-to-7 shape and change up that held it's plane at 61-63 MPH.
