Long Island Top Prospect (January 16, 2017)
Rizzo, a 2019 right-handed hitting infielder, stands at  5-foot-11 and weighs 170 pounds, ran a 4.21 from home to first.  Offensively- Starts from a square balanced lower half, slight bend in both knees, with the hands above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat moving between a 45 degree to a parallel position. Gets to the launch phase of the swing using a subtle shift of weight to the backside while the lead foot uses a toe-to-heel movement with a slight stride forward as the hands are loaded straight back outside the back shoulder. Hands were quick and compact doing a good job of staying connected to the lower half, driving the ball particularly well from the pull side gap to the opposite field gap. Recorded an exit velocity of 84 MPH an increase of 3 MPH from last event.  Defensively- In the outfield; controlled approach on the ground, fielding everything outside his lead foot. Uses a step through shuffle vs. a back leg drive (traditional crowhop). Arm works well with some carry at 81 MPH. On the infield, moves well laterally with a slightly upright approach into the ball. Clean exchange that could be more connected to his release as their is some delay into his throw. Arm strength of 79 MPH matches previous high. Pitching- On the mound; sets up center rubber with a short drop step to a mid chest high leg drive. Arm action is long and loose with little restriction from a lower ¾ slot. FB showed late movement sitting 74-76 MPH (a 2 MPH bump from last pre-season). Breaking ball bounced back and forth between Slurve/slider action with late 2-to-8 shape at 64-65 MPH. Change up showed impressive arm side fade at 70 MPH.
Long Island Preview (February 18, 2016)
Standing with a slender build a 5'10", 150 lbs shows great project-ability as a 2019 Grad.  Good control of his body and a fast development in his athleticism cutting down his Home-to-first laser time in less than a month to a fast 4.07. Hitting -  Starts his stance slightly open and goes toe to heel at his launch position.  His overall athleticism really shines with pitches belt high and up but struggled to drive the ball down in the zone. Generated exit velocity of 81 MPH off the tee and really shows tremendous bat speed for a 2019 Grad.  Defensively-  Arm improved 6 MPH in less than a month with his max infield velocity across the diamond at 79 MPH.  Needs to improve on footwork and get more aggressive attacking the ball, fields on his heels rather than the ball of his feet, showed good accuracy but needs to cut down transfer time and a shorter arm swing.  These minor adjustments will show a tremendous improvement to his infield ability given his raw talent. Pitching - Works at a fast pace with a lot of moving parts out of the windup, shows project-ability just needs a better pitching motion that will allow him to repeat his pitches without much effort.  Fastball sat 71-73 MPH with trouble hitting his spots and topped out at 74 MPH.  Changeup shows an acceptable drop in velocity at 64-66 MPH and does a great job keeping mechanics consistent with his fastball.  His curve lacked control but showed an upside on movement while sitting between 59-62 MPH.
NY State Open ID (January 31, 2016)
Steven is an athletic 5-foot-10 150 pound SS/RHP who ran a 7.47 60 and a 4.16 home-to-1B. Offensively- Steven starts slightly open with his stance, using a slow and controlled load of his hands and a stride that brings him back to even (with a small heel-hang). Hands lead the swing but he showed the ability to stay inside the ball and extend through the zone. Exit velocity was 81 MPH. Line drive/flyball results. Defensively- Steven shows athletic actions and creates proper angles into the ball. Glove side foot lands on heel prior to fielding position which causes him to sit back flat footed with hands getting underneath. Proper shuffle step and accurate throws with an infield velocity that peaked at 73 MPH across the diamond. Long term projection will keep him on the left side of the infield, with a possible move to 3B. Pitching- On the mound Steven sets up center rubber using a short side step up to a 3/4 chest balance point. Arm action is long and clean, working through a 3/4 slot. Stride direction drifts to the 1B side but he is still able to get up and over his front side. Repeats delivery. FB was in the 71-73 MPH range, touching 74 MPH with an easy effort. Change up showed impressive late fade to his arm side at 65-66 MPH. Curveball was spotted with some 2-to-8 shape at 58-59 MPH. Good feel for secondary stuff, breaking ball will get tighter with improved arm speed and staying on top of the ball a bit longer. Projects well as a dual player.
