Notes

Comments

6/03/19

Body Type: 6-foot-6, 210-pound lengthy frame.
Mechanical/Delivery Notes: Quick and on time 3/4 arm action. Sits back into back leg but still looks like there is more velocity in the tank. Overall solid mechanics to work with.
Fastball: 83-85mph with above average ability to locate pitch on both corners of the plate.
Curveball: 71-73 mph. 11/5 sharp movement. Fair share of swing and misses. Above average offering.
Pitchability: High pitchability throwing both pitches on the corners consistently.

2/17/19

Body Type: 6-foot-2 180-pound prospect with a  projectable frame.
Mechanical/Delivery Notes: Compact and fluid delivery. Works in-line with slight hip load. Requires regular effort working out of a ¾ slot.
Fastball: 82-84 mph fastball showed above average run and sink to the arm side.
Curveball: 70-71 mph curveball has good spin and depth. There’s sharpness to the 11/5 break.
Changeup: 77-78 mph changeup is thrown with deceptive arm action. The pitch has plus run and sink to the arm side.
Pitchability: True three pitch mix. Fastball likely plays above its currently velocity range, does need to improve command of the pitch. Both secondary pitch are above average and shows ability to land them in the zone.
Role: All signs point to an eventual starter at this stage. Fastball command will need to improve, but there’s enough there to make it work.

2/10/19

While uncommitted, 2020 RHP Bobby Jones, out of St. Xavier, proved he fit amongst the state’s top arms. At 6-5 210-pounds, Jones possesses a big, projectable frame with long levers. He threw from a ¾ arm slot with an arm action that was potentially a little longer than desired in the backside, but this also creates a little deception and ‘funk’.His fastball sat between 83-85 mph with good sink and fade to the arm side while his changeup ranged between 79-81 mph. His changeup wasn’t a traditional change of speed pitch, it showed more as a ‘power changeup’ with sharp, late depth that would produce swings and misses. His best secondary offering was definitely a 71-73 mph slurvey type breaking ball. The pitch showed both quality depth and lateral break. It had tight spin and sharp action. His catcher had some difficulty catching the pitch and it was potentially the sharpest breaking ball we saw at the event. He also showed a slider at 75 mph which for the most part was just a smaller, tighter version of his slurve. It was a pitch that could be useful but isn’t currently distinct enough from his other breaking ball for hitters to have to truly respect it as a fourth pitch.

6/06/18

6-foot-5, 205-pound. Right-handed pitcher with a projectable frame. Shows some rhythm in the delivery with minimal effort in a tall and fall type lower half. Fastball works down hill out of a three-quarter slot at 81 to 84 mph. Also offered a fairly sharp 11 to 5 breaking ball that Jones shows the ability to command in the zone at 70 to 74 mph.

5/30/18

A mechanically efficient right-hander with a physical, 6-foot-5 frame. Arm is long and loose through a high-¾ slot. Delivery doesn’t have much effort. Pounded the zone with his 81-84 mph fastball and spun one of the better breakers we saw at the event.

1/30/18

A physical presence on the mound with a 6-foot-5, 205-pound frame. Tempo is slower before showing an explosive lower half down the mound. Arm action is long with signs of looseness through a ¾ slot. Fastball stays mostly true through the zone with occasional run at 78-81 mph. Breaking ball was impressive, showing both depth and sharpness to it at 67-71 mph. Maintains arm speed on his 72-74 mph changeup that he looks to still be developing feel for.

7/18/17

A 6-foot-3, 198-pound prospect. On the mound the right-hander has a fluid tempo to his delivery that requires little effort. Leg lift is chest high and he lands in line at foot strike. Momentum takes him directly towards home plate at finish. Arm action is long and loose, with slight hitch in the back.  Arm speed is developing and he works through a high-¾ slot. Fastball stays mostly true through the zone with occasion cut and sink. Does a nice job pounding the zone with the offering to setup secondary offerings. Breaking ball is tight, with enough movement to miss barrels. Spinner moves on an 11/5 plane and he showed solid feel for the offering. Limited viewing on the changeup but it showed potential. Maintains arm speed and puts some fade on the offering. With frame and pitchability he projects as a starter at the next level.  At the plate he swings from the right-side, starting in a taller setup. Load is fluid, taking hands slightly back during leg lift timing mechanism. Stride is controlled and he maintains balance throughout swing sequence. Strong kid with developing bat speed. Much more pop to come as he fills out projectable frame. Swing is smooth and he stays within himself. Middle of the lineup potential.
