Jake Leonard: LHP/1B, (2023) Dublin Scioto, OH. 5-foot-11, 170-pound. In the box, the left-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 84 mph. (58.5 mph bat speed average). (18.5 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced quiet stance with a compact load, then used a controlled stride. Has developing efficient bat speed, simple flat swing plane and high finish. Solid in the infield, his best throw was registered at 60 mph; has consistent feet, firm hands, and a natural exchange. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Used a quick arm action with a high ¾ slot. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 8.2. On the mound, showed consistent arm speed, also used a high ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows easy effort. Produced a fastball that came in at 71-74 mph. Shows slight running action. (Max spin 1851; Avg 1793). Shows slurvey action on his 11/5 curveball (59-62). (Max spin 1720; Avg 1690). His changeup (65-66) has slight action.
12/13/20
Scouting Notes: Athletically built southpaw with an easy, low effort delivery. Shorter arm action that stays compact through a high-3/4 slow. Relatively clean movement patterns in general. Three-pitch southpaw with a strike-thrower tag. Fastball: Worked both sides of the plate with late, live through the zone. Heavy cutting action at times. Breaking Ball: Up/down breaker that pops out of the hand with big, gradual action. Expect pitch to sharpen up as velocity jumps. Changeup: Regular sink, decent sell, more than playable offering. Hit: Lefty hit tool with a smoother, repeatable load. Balanced launch with a slightly downhill trajectory to contact. Natural tools are comparable with strength/batpseed receiving similar grades. Did a nice job staying inside the baseball/working middle back in BP. Top exit velocity of 75mph. Power: Line drive flight with tools to run the gaps. Offensive Projection: Middle ceiling. Field: First baseman with feel for the spot. Smooth, easy tempo off the bag with ball skills that fit the position. Throw: More than enough strength for the 1B position. Defensive Projection: 1B.
