6/25/19

VA/DC Top Prospect Games West

McCullough is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an upright balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short and quick to ball with strength at contact and extension through the ball. Uphill swing path, line drive swing with loft built in, ball carries, showed a pull approach, exit velocity was 88. In the infield, rounds ball and fields with a wider base and average hands. Works through ball to a quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short fast arm action, infield velocity was 90. On the mound, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action that is loose and very quick, normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands on line with a complete athletic finish. Fastball 82-86, with downward plane and a bit of late run to armside, showed ability to command to both sides of the plate. Curveball was 67-74 with some armspeed and gradual 11/5 break. Change-up was 70-71 with good armspeed.

2/16/19

2/16/19 - 6-foot-2, 185-pound primary pitcher sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a repeatable delivery. Pounds the zone with his three pitch mix. Curveball sat 68-71 with 11/5 rotation and changeup sat 71-73 with above average feel. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed solid balance and the ability to use all fields. Registered an 89 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.29 60-yard dash. Showed active feet and confidence in his glove hand with 90 mph arm strength across the diamond defensively.

9/30/18

9/30/18 - Defensively, at third base hands are soft, quiet and confident while demonstrating solid fundamentals. Transfer and arm action are clean. Flashed above average arm strength on event best 85 mph throw across the diamond.

1/28/18

1/28/18 - 6-foot-3, 180-pound primary pitcher sat 81-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with late life to his fastball. Balanced, repeatable mechanics with a projectable frame that has plenty of room for added growth. Changeup is an excellent pitch at 73-75 with sink and arm side run thrown at fastball arm speed. Slider sat 74-75 with late, short break. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a line drive approach with a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. Showcased 84 mph arm strength across the diamond defensively with clean, fundamental actions at third base.

9/10/17

9/10/17 - 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed some lower half glide but hands work well through contact leading to consistent hard contact with a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. Ran a 7.70 60-yard dash and showcased 85 mph arm strength across the diamond while consistently playing through the baseball. Righty sat 81-83 off the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot. Also commanded a curveball with 11/5 rotation at 70-72 and a changeup with good sell at 70-71.

9/9/17 - 6-foot-2, 170-pound two-way prospect participated as a primary pitcher on this date. The righty sat 78-79 touching 80 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot during three innings of work. Allowed just two hits, one of the infield variety, while striking out three. Also commanded an above average curveball with 11/5 rotation at 69-71. Projectable frame and repeatable mechanics projects for additional velocity in coming years.

12/11/16 -
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound prospect. Ran a 7.75 60-yard dash. Was impressive during his defensive evaluation at third base. Does a nice job with his footwork approaching the baseball which allows him to maintain momentum through fielding and into his throws. Glove skills are well above average for his age. Threw across the infield with 74 mph arm strength. At the plate he starts in a taller set up prior to his leg kick load. Keeps hands simple during loading sequence. A strong kid with above average bat speed through the zone. His slightly uphill path puts natural loft on the baseball. Ball comes off his bat well. Reached a top exit velocity of 82 mph off the tee. On the mound, McCullough had a high arm slot with a fastball up to 76. His delivery had medium effort and he used a short arm action. His breaking ball had 11/5 break.

10/29/16

10/29/16 - Right-handed hitter with room to add strength to his 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame (and plenty of time to do so). Starts from a slightly open, narrow stance and strides to square. Collapses back leg, causing him to work uphill and underneath the baseball. Ran a 7.55 60-yard dash and posted an 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively, he recorded 77 mph arm strength and would benefit from fielding the baseball out front more consistently.

9/11/16

9/11/16 - 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a short, lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Showed a flat barrel path with solid feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 81 mph. Ran a 7.64 60-yard dash and displayed active feet with the ability to play through the baseball defensively. Righty sat 73-75 while touching 78 mph off the mound with some sink and run to his fastball. 63 mph curveball showed tighter 11/5 break out of the stretch, while changeup sat 66-67.

7/19/16

7/19/16 - 6-foot-1, 160-pound athletic frame. A contact type hitter that start in a tall setup before using a small leg kick to initiate his load. Keeps his hands simple and loose during his short stride forward before taking a compact path to the ball. Smooth swing. Reached a top exit velocity of 80 mph and ran a 7.81 60-yard dash. In the infield he does a nice job with his footwork, allowing him to maintain momentum through fielding position into his throws. Threw across teh infield with 70 mph arm strength. On the mound he has short, quick arm action and a low effort delivery. Strike thrower. Fastball was anywhere from 75-78 while using both sides of the plate. His best offspeed pitch is his 11/5 shaped breaking ball that had signs of sharpness at 66-68 mph. Also flashed a changeup near fastball armspeed.

Offensively, 6-foot-3, 180 pound, right-hander works out of over-the-top arm slot. Arm action is long and loose. Marked leaning back just prior to and following stride foot landing combined with early front hip opening creates drag. Fastball sat 79-81 mph with arm side run. Curveball at 66-68 mph flashed 11/5 shape and moderate depth. Change up sat 70-72 mph while being thrown at fastball arm speed and showing consistent arm side fade/sink. Long levers, athleticism and arm strength lend to considerable upside with mechanical adjustments.

Abbreviated takeaway on separation into a high three-quarter slot. Fastball sat 74-76 and he showed a feel for an 11/5 curveball at 61-63, while he would benefit from maintaining fastball arm speed on his change-up at 64-66.
