Shewmake

3/3/19: Athletic and slender-bodied at 6-foot-4 and 175 pounds, Shewmake has an unusual hitting position with his head and shoulders in front of his hips at contact. Seems to be trying to drive his hands through extension so much that he's allowing his head and upper half to move forward with his hands. With average bat speed, he didn't produce much hard contact on this look, but he does put the bat on the ball due to his exceptional hand/eye and grit in the batter's box. Showed above-average arm strength that played down due to the length of his release, which is a result of his longer arm action. He's also an above-average runner underway and a threat to steal an occasional base. The son of a college baseball coach, Shewmake possesses excellent makeup. He will likely embrace the grind of pro ball, while others succumb to it. With another strong year at the plate, expect him to be selected early on Day Two. (Seifert)

10/28/18: A 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame Junior with a long, lanky frame. Showed a powerful line drive swing to all fields from the left hand side of the plate. He recognizes pitches well and generates bat speed with his quick hands. Defensively he is very sound and makes the routine plays and then some. Soft hands on groundballs and shows exceptional footwork and quick exchange around the bag on double play balls. (Kelly)

7/14/8: Athletic, slender bodied utility player with defensive versatility. Played first and second base for the CNT, as well as shortstop for his college team this past spring. With present average arm strength and run tool, he has the abilities to be a capable corner outfielder or third baseman if his arm action continues to improve. He’s already taken much of the length and hook out of it since his freshman year in college. Also showed improvement to his swing since last summer. Shortened and quickened his stroke, showing more bat speed. However, he continues to have a long, diving stride while hitting from an open stance. The long stride helps create separation as he tends to keep his hands back, but it also causes him to hit off his front foot, giving him holes in his swing and limiting his power. He may get away with this approach using aluminum bats in the spring, but not in the summer with wood. The results have not been there for the second year in a row. He is currently slashing .162/.289/.243 following last summer when he slashed .209/.327/.302 for the CNT. What he has achieved offensively is largely due to his exceptional hand/eye and just plain grit in the batter’s box. Shewmake is a plus athlete and a scout’s definition of a “baseball player.” He looks to have great on-field makeup with plenty of self-confidence and passion for the game. Also has the potential to be selected in the early rounds next June, and in my mind a top candidate to overachieve once he fully matures physically and continues to make adjustments with his aptitude and athleticism.
