7/01/21

2021 MLB DraftA prep teammate of Ty Madden, Cowser is a long-bodied athlete with five-tool potential. He jumped onto the national scene after an impressive stint with the 2019 College National Team, but then struggled in the shortened 2020 season with a .255/.379/.364 slash. He rebounded with a top-round caliber 2021: .374/.490/.680 with 16 home runs. A plus runner, Cowser also swiped 17 bases in 20 attempts. With a pure stroke and quick hands, he projects to become an above average to better major league hitter with average power production. Defensively, Cowser shows an average arm and range and his strong instincts should allow him to stay in the big field for the foreseeable future.

8/15/20

Cowser jumped on the scene in a big way as a freshman back in 2019, hitting .361 with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 54 RBIs to earn a spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Cowser, a lengthy 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, didn’t get off to a great start this past season, hitting .255 with a home run and six RBIs, but all the tools are there to be a premier prospect in next year’s draft. Physically, Cowser reminds me so much of former Texas A&M shortstop and first-round pick Braden Shewmake. Shewmake is 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, similar to Cowser, and the two have the same look when they step into the box. Cowser, like Shewmake, has a sweet lefthanded swing and does a good job of guiding the ball with the bat. The two are similar from a power standpoint, too. Shewmake finished his freshman season at A&M with 11 home runs, while Cowser had seven at Sam Houston State. I do think there’s more size and power available in Cowser’s frame, but we also thought that about Shewmake for the longest time. Shewmake was still a first-round talent.

7/3/19:Lanky and lean, 6-foot-3, 190 pound frame. Will continue to add strength. Impressive ability to get the barrel to the baseball. Collected three hits on the night, spraying the baseball all over the field. Simple setup and approach with good balance. Handsy swing with good rhythm and looseness. Ran a 4.26 down the line on a hard ground out to the 1stbaseman. (B Hall)

7/1/19:Largely unknown, despite coming off a stellar freshman year for the Bearkats with a .361/.450/.602 slash, Cowser was a pleasant surprise to the scouts at the Trials. He has much physical projection remaining to his long, slender 6-foot-3, 185 pound frame and the athleticism to project as a potential Day One prospect for 2021. He played solid defense in both center and right fields, stole a couple bases, hit .333 (4-for-12) and reached base at a .500 clip (8-for-16). There isn’t a ton of power with his present handsy swing, but he will likely grow into it as his swing should work even better with future strength gains. The left-handed hitter also looked comfortable in the batter’s box against both righties and lefties and showed the innate ability to get the barrel to the ball with a loose swing. He walked several times and was also hit by a pitch. On the bases he is a plus runner underway with a smooth stride and a threat to steal. Ran a 4.26 down the line on a groundout to the right side. From the outfield he showed a slightly below average arm with solid range in all directions. He coasted smoothly and directly on his routes, highlighted by running down a deep fly ball to the fence in center field during the fourth CNT scrimmage. (Seifert)

05.19.17 - Sam Houston State recruit.  6-foot-3, 185-pound frame. Showed solid range on defense when he ran down a ball in the gap. The left-handed hitter has an inside-out approach and stays on the baseball through contact with strong hands. Put together competitive at-bats and battles with two-strikes.

03.28.17 - Sam Houston State recruit. 6-foot-3, 185-pound, strong, projectable frame. Cowser is a force in the heart of the Cy Ranch lineup, hitting fourth. The left-handed hitter was 2-for-3 with two singles. His first knock was a sharp base hit to right field where he ran a 4.57-second time to first. His second was a base hit through the left side of the infield. Cowser has a strong top hand and attacks the inside of the baseball with strength at contact. With his frame, athleticism and natural ability to hit, Cowser is a quality sign for Sam Houston State
