4.23.18 Speaker is a C/RHP that stands 6-foot-4, 215-pounds. During I/O, Speaker threw strikes to second base and has carry in his arm. Between innings, he threw 1.93 and a 2.11. After catching three innings, the junior jumped on the mound for two innings of relief. Working from a high-¾ slot, Mason’s fastball sat 89-90 with arm side life in his first inning of work. His breaking ball was 75-76 with 10/4 slurvey shape. In his second inning of work, the breaking had more 11/5 break with better downer shape at 73-76, while his fastball was still 87-89. Mixed in a changeup at 74 with fastball arm speed for a strike. With his size and easy arm action, it’s easy to dream that there is more velocity in the tank, and his highest upside may be on the bump.

01.20.18 Speaker stands 6-foot-3, 205-pounds with a projectable frame. Mason not only launched a home run during batting practice (91 mph exit velocity off the tee), but he also topped out at 88 mph on the mound. The right-handed hitter shows easy rhythm with relaxed hands. Starts from a slightly open stance then loads back, pinching his knees together as he triggers his hands back and down before striding out, landing square. Powerful lower half transfer, natural lift with an uphill path, strong hands at contact with gap power and more to come in the future. Behind the plate, Speaker has a quick exchange and has good carry to second base with a velocity from the crouch of 78 mph and pop times of 2.14-2.26.

A two-way player and right-handed pitcher, Speaker works from a high-¾ slot with a quick arm stroke from back to front. Good hip turn down the mound with a drop and drive delivery that he repeats well. His fastball was mostly 84-86 mph, although he did bump a couple of 87’s and one 88. He has good feel for a 74-76 mph changeup that has arm side fade and depth, while he can also spin a curveball at 71-73 mph with short 11/5 break, but that pitch should improve as he continues to sync up his hand break with his his lower half. Flashed a slider that had more cutter action at 75-77 mph and lateral shape. With Speakers strong frame and hand speed, look for the velocity to continue to climb.
