Athletic thin frame standing 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame. Gathers upright over the rubber before a drop and drive down the mound, landing on line. Full arm circle and throws from three-quarter slot. Ward showed the ability to throw three pitches for strikes from the jump. It was a fastball, curveball, changeup mix and used the changeup effectively. The fastball sat at 79-81 mph and worked to both sides of the plate. He threw the breaking ball for strikes at 63-66 mph with 12/6 shape. The changeup had gradual fade at 73-76 mph with above average feel for the zone.
VA/MD State Games
5-foot-10, 160-pound lean frame. Begins in a balanced strong stance with a controlled rhythmic load, the uses a leg kick. Had a short, simple swing plane, quick efficient bat speed and balanced finish. (63.2 mph bat speed average). (18.6 mph hand speed average). During BP found some barrels with loud contact. Aggressive approach. smooth athletic in the infield. Has athletic controll in his feet, soft hands, and a quick clean exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Used a quick short arm action and a high 3/4 slot while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. On the mound, used a ¾ arm angle and a quick arm action while showing quick arm speed. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows some effort. Showed a consistent balance point. Sat with his fastball at 78-80 mph; showed both sides of the plate command and slight running action. (Max spin 1791). Shows control around the zone and tight action on his 11/5 curveball (64-66). (Max spin 1305).
PreSeason All-State East
Ward is 5-8 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, showed a good approach using the whole field, exit velocity was 82. In the infield, rounds the ball and fields with a wider base with above average hands, works through the ball to a quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74. Ran a 7.10 60 yard dash.
