Gilroy

C/1B Joshua Gilroy (Arrowhead, 2024) is ranked as one of the top catchers in Wisconsin’s 2024 class and showed why on Tuesday. The uncommitted backtop stands at a physical 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, with strength throughout. During BP, Gilroy showcased advanced power with physical hands and aggressive bat speed. His swing contained an uphill bat path with a pull-side tendency, a swing that recorded one of the higher exit velocities of the day at 97 mph. Behind the dish, Gilroy showed athleticism while blocking and topped out at a pop time of 1.95. With a clean transfer and an accurate arm, Gilroy has continued to trend in the right direction when talking about his defensive skill set. In live gameplay, he looked comfortable behind the dish blocking the occasional ball in the dirt, and received pitches well. He also manned the first-base position for a handful of innings during live gameplay and he is equally impressive there, too.

Defense: 1.95-2.14 pop times. Quick, clean transfer, short right foot gains ground, athletic on blocks and reliable fielding bunts.

Gilroy is a player who continually shows out well in front of our staff in event. Gilroy, a 6-foot-2, 205 pound backstop who can hit, put on a display in batting practice. He hits with a simple, handsy swing that creates loads of bat speed, and with the present strength in his hands, the ball was jumping off the bat at the tune of exit velocities in the upper 90’s (97 MPH max exit velocity, good for fifth at the event). Behind the plate, Gilroy turns the ball around quickly on steal attempts and delivered a pop time of 1.98 seconds with accuracy. Gilroy remains uncommitted but has the toolset and skills to help a program at the next level.

Hit: RHH. Strock set up, short stride. Centered move through the ball, quick hands and bat speed, ball jumps, stays through the middle to both gaps. Uses ground well.

Defense: 1.98-2.11 pop times. Works up through the baseball, quiet hands, athletic out of the crouch, works in-line, quick transfer.

Gilroy presents a solid 6-foot-1, 210-frame from his position behind the dish. Gilroy continued to show well offensively on Tuesday, as we saw at the Madison Preseason ID in the spring, as he had one of the top exit velocities during his BP session in the 2024 class, at 95 mph, and he’s one of the few players in the state, regardless of class, who’s showcased triple-digit exit speeds in previous showcase performances. Gilroy flashed a quick bat as well, as he averaged 72.2 mph barrel speed, traced by the Blast device. Gilroy has frequently shown the ability to reach that bat strength in-game, too, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him send a no-doubt home run to the deepest part of Fenway during live gameplay later in the day.

Gilroy is an imposing bat for this Rays MKE squad. Standing at a thick 6-foot-1, 210-pounds Gilroy’s power potential is real and he showed it off in game, smacking a ground rule double to the deepest part of the field. Earlier this year, Gilroy was a stand-out performer from our Madison Preseason ID event and has continued to impress each time he is in front of our staff.

Defense: 2.03-2.15 pop times. Gains ground towards the pitcher during replace. Falls to the gloveside at times. Quick exchanges.

Gilroy is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound sophomore with a strong, durable frame. In the box, Gilroy stands tall and narrow with a high handset, making aggressive, connected rotation after firmly planting into his lead leg, and delivering a heavy barrel at impact. Gilroy generated an elite 102.7 mph exit speed from 77 mph barrel speed, and he showcased strongly in the catching session with a 2.03 pop and 76 mph arm. Gilroy’s elite bat strength and progression as a defender have him trending up in the class.

Hit: RHH. Balanced setup, simple hand load with minimal shoulder movement, leg kick timing trigger into a long stride. Quick hands with a level path through the zone, consistent hard contact to the whole field with a line-drive approach, showed the ability to take pitches to the opposite field when pitched on the outer half of the plate.
Power: 97 max exit velocity, averaged 91.8 mph. 372’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph. Loose, high 3/4 arm slot, throws were around the base.
Defense: 2.13-2.19 pop times. Sure-handed with a clean transfer, active blocker with directional footwork on throws to bases.
