Solid fielding middle guy, who has attended a number of PBR events. His game has improved a great deal in the last year. Ran a 4.40 down the line on his dig to first base. In the field, showed solid prep work through the ball, soft hands and the ability to make the throws. Threw 76 mph from the infield across the diamond. At the plate, the frame still needs added strength, tee exit velocity of 83 mph. The setup is even footed and the path to the ball is flat, minor casting of the bat, causing length. The bat needs to finish, he cuts off his swing after contact, the barrel needs to work all the way through after contact. Solid player, who loves to play and works at it.

The best I have seen Derek play was this past Tuesday. The hard work is paying off as he played very well. Ran a 4.55 down the line on the dig to first. Threw 74 mph across the diamond showing a much improved approach through the ball and glove work. The hands work much smoother and faster now as a defender. Handles the pivot well and is a student of the game. At the plate, the hands work freely out of a even footed and hands start. The bottom half still has a little too much action for me, picking the front foot up and putting it back down. Quieting that down will help him spread the field and cover the dish. Tee exit velocity of 83 mph and could improve with body strength in the next year. I like how hard this guy works.

The second time we have had an opportunity to see Derek. He is a skilled player who shows a solid glove and a quick release in the middle of the field. The glove and footwork are well taught, I see him as a second baseman. Threw 67 mph across the diamond out of a quick release. Ran a 7.4 60-yard dash. At the plate, shows a quick bat with a limited finish. Needs to work all the way through his swing. The swing itself, is clean and works well. The hands are quick and clean out of an even stance. The bottom half of his swing is under control.
