5-foot-9, 173-pound infielder with room to grow. From the left side, feet start level, hands high, very quiet stance, good load, hitches a little, has good use of the lower half, strong to the pull side, registered a 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively moves well, a little rough with his pickup but makes the plays, confident, 71 mph across the infield. On the mound shows some promise, releases from low ¾ arm slot, throws his fastball like all his other pitches, maxed out at 74 mph. Mathieu is in the 11th-grade and looks to be filling out. In a year’s time it’ll be interesting to see how he grows as a two-way player.

5-foot-8, 165-pound 2017 with small frame and the chance to add strength. On the mound, Mathieu worked with an easy tempo into balance point with clean separation. Arm was short in the back with a down up action into a ¾ arm slot. Some effort involved, more arm strength than quickness. Tendency to miss arm side with fastball, was between 69-71 mph. Breaking ball was 60-62 mph, was best when he was able to get out front and extended, had 11/5 shape. Changeup was 65-69 mph, did good job of keeping arm speed. Offensively, ran a 5.21 from home to first and a 5.75 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits from a narrow stance with slight knee bend, small stride and little hitch with load. Exit velocity was 74 mph. Defensively, sat back on a few balls, need to see more action in the lower half and attack a little more. Arm action was from a ¾ slot and was clocked at 70 mph across the field.
