PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

  • LaRon Mitchell

Susquehanna HS, LHP, Class of 2014

Mitchell is a physical left-handed pitcher at 6-foot-5, 215-pounds but does not overpower the baseball. Mitchell throws with a loose-armed motion out of a high 3/4 arm slot and did not come close to reaching maximum effort. He sat 88-90 at the Preseason All-State Showcase in February. He commanded his fastball for strikes out of the wind up and the stretch. His curveball showed good 1/9 rotation and two-plane action. He showed considerable arm-side run to both his fastball and his 74 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. We saw Mitchell in November sitting 85-87. With his size and sound, repeatable mechanics it seems the sky is the limit for Mitchell. His performance will vault him to near the top of the Class of 2014 rankings in Pennsylvania and likely onto the national recruiting scene.

  • Adam Seibert

Episcopal Academy, RHP, Class of 2014

We last saw the 6-foot-6, 220-pound prospect sitting 83-85 while touching 86 mph at the PA Underclass Games in September. Seibert touched 90 mph on his first pitch at the Preseason All-State Showcase and began an electric bullpen that had everyone in attendance buzzing. The athletic junior sat 89-90 while touching 91 three times out of a high 3/4 arm slot. His fastball was free and easy out of the hand and had late life. Seibert also showcased an 82 mph changeup with arm-side run thrown at fastball arm speed. Seibert took three months to put down the baseball to concentrate on his body this winter and it appears to have worked. He has gained 20 pounds of good weight and seems to be on his way to elite status on the national recruiting scene.

  • Drew Landis

Red Lion Area HS, C/3B, Class of 2014

Landis separated himself from the field at the Preseason All-State Showcase because of his pop times. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior threw five throws to second base with 1.97 being his slowest. His top two times were a 1.88 and 1.89. Landis has an exceptionally quick transfer and gains ground effectively. Offensively he had one of the better batting practice rounds of the day. Landis used a short, compact line-drive stroke to consistently square baseballs throughout his round. He wore out the middle and opposite sides of the field while staying inside the baseball. Landis showed his athleticism and versatility by also working at third base. He showed a capable glove and throws that had good carry across the diamond at 82 mph.

  • Mitchell Machi

North Allegheny HS, OF/RHP, Class of 2014

Machi showed well in all facets of the game at the Preseason All-State Showcase. He earned his spot at the top of the Class of 2014 outfielders with an incredible round of batting practice. Machi used his 96 mph bat exit velocity, tops on the day among all prospects at the event, to punish the baseball repeatedly. He displayed excellent timing and rhythm to his swing while squaring every pitch and driving the baseball. Machi sat 82-83 on the mound out of a high 3/4 arm slot. We saw Machi in August sitting 84-85 and touching 86. He showcased a 65 mph 11/5 breaking curveball, a 68 mph slider that showed late movement and a 73 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. Machi has the potential to be a two-way guy at the next level for the right program.

  • Ben Dum

West Perry HS, RHP/3B, Class of 2015

Dum is a 6-foot, 175-pound prospect with an athletic build and a lot of potential. The sophomore two-way player showed smooth actions in the infield with soft hands and a quick release. Dum showcased good carry on throws of 78 mph across the diamond with much more arm strength to spare. He displayed good feet as evidenced by his 4.20 home-to-first time. The left-handed hitter hits out of a square stance with a very short stride. He barreled the baseball consistently with an 82 mph bat exit velocity. Dum throws from a low 3/4 arm slot creating interesting angles with significant movement to everything he throws. He showcased a fastball that had significant arm side run sitting 82-84. His 68 mph curveball has slider action to it and his 69 mph circle change showed big arm side run. Dum has a feel for all three pitches and an athletic frame that projects for spikes in velocity in the future. His bullpen session, combined with his work at 3B make him a player to watch in this class.

  • Connor Kerns

    Bishop Shanahan, SS/3B, Connor Kerns

Kerns is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect who is most likely destined to make the move to 3B. He showcased a solid 83 mph arm across the diamond and the ability to play through the baseball at the Preseason All-State Showcase. Kerns has good feet and could easily transition to the corner infield position as he continues to grow physically. Kerns moves well for his size turning in a 4.19 home-to-first time. Offensively Kerns shows some power potential and the ability to stay behind the baseball. Kerns used a high elbow load and a solid lower half to create an 84 mph bat exit velocity.
