Payne has a 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame. He is a right-handed sidearmer who recently made the conversion from a high-3/4 arm slot. He pitches primarily from the stretch and shows an effortless arm action and the ability to be consistent with his arm slot and his mechanics. His fastball sat 73-76 mph and had good sink. He showed the ability to command his fastball to both sides of the plate. He had a sweeping breaking ball that sat 58-62 mph with good break and his command of it is still in progress. He showed good arm speed on his changeup that sat 66-68 mph with sink.
