STATEWIDE GAME OF THE DAY

No. 18 Normal U-High (21-1, 8-1 Corn Belt) slipped past No. 23 Mahomet-Seymour 2-1 in a Corn Belt classic at ISU in Normal, on Monday. Mahomet-Seymour (12-3, 5-3 Corn Belt) starting and losing pitcher, Illinois State-bound Jack Rettig (6-2) plated the only Bulldog run in the first inning, for an early MS lead 1-0. Two walks and a crucial Bulldog error, led the two Pioneer runs in the bottom of the third. Rettig and U-High starting and winning pitcher Zach Frey (5-1) proceeded to put goose eggs on the ISU scoreboard. Frey had a three-hit day at the plate.

SHOCKERS OF THE DAY

Bartonville Limestone (8-9, 1-6 Mid-Illini) stunned No. 8 Metamora 5-4 in Bartonville on Monday. The home of former MLB great Jim Thome was rocking on Monday night, as Thome’s Alma Mater the Limestone Rockets, knocked off Matamora (17-4, 6-1 Mid-Illini), scoring the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth. After Metamora scored three times in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4, Blake Marsh walked to leadoff the Rocket sixth. Courtesy runner Jeren Stewart stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout, off the bat of Alex Reid. Limestone starting and winning pitcher Calvin Peacock, mowed down the Redbirds with 1-2-3 seventh, to complete his eight-hit gem.

Oswego (9-9) shocked the state on Monday in Oswego, winning in walk-off fashion against No. 9 Joliet Catholic Academy. Trailing 2-1, the Panthers started their uprising against Purdue-bound Nick Dalesandro, who cruised on the mound through six innings (1-1, 6.1 IP, 3R, 4H, 3ER, 5K, 2BB) . Cole Aughenbaugh singled and Dalesandro walked Joe Fogerty. Joliet Catholic Academy (14-5-1) closer Mike Quiram replaced Dalesandro and retired the first hitter he faced on a tap to the pitcher, advancing Aughenbaugh and Fogerty to third and second. Dominick Lukowski, ripped a single to right, plating Aughenbaugh and Fogerty, with the tying and walk-off game winning runs for the Panthers, sending shocked but very-happy Panther fans dancing down Route 71.
