ABOUT

In 2023, Prep Baseball launched its national high school power rankings for the first time ever, creating a National Top-25 and subsequent regional rankings, updated through last spring campaign. In 2024, Prep Baseball will replace the regional rankings with an expanded National Top-50 in their place.

Throughout this spring season, we will be redirecting our local knowledge and baseball acumen to rank the top high school teams in the country, especially as these programs begin to schedule out-of-state competition more and more each year.

Our initial rankings are weighted on previous performances, prospects, and projections, though the ensuing updates will be inherently tied to the production on the field. Simply put: wins and championships matter. A human element to the list will still provide important information on the intricacies that the season bestows. Whether it is a narrow loss in a rivalry game or a five-game in three days gauntlet, you can count on Prep Baseball to critically examine the playing field at all times.

Here's our latest edition of the National High School Rankings, updated on Tuesday, March 5:

NATIONAL TOP-50

3/5 Rank (Last Update)
School (State)
Head Coach + 2024 Record
1 (1) Corona (CA) Andy Wise (3-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

The Panthers haven't played since Feb. 15 when they downed JSerra HS, 4-1, which was their third win of the week as part of Prep Baseball California's annual Spring Invitational. They defeated ranked Huntington Beach and Ayala along the way, setting themselves up for the winner-take-all championship game on Wednesday against No. 4 Orange Lutheran HS at Great Park Stadium.

2 (2) Stoneman Douglas (FL) Todd Fitz-Gerald (5-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Up to 5-0 this spring, riding a 54-game win streak now, Stoneman Douglas added three wins in between updates (vs. Monarch, Taravella, and West Broward) by a combined score of 23-1. They remain the No. 2 team in the nation in this update.

3 (10) ⬆️ Catholic B.R. (LA) Brad Bass (9-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

It's been a dominant start to the year for Catholic, including a three-game sweep of rivals West Monroe HS (LA), which was ranked No. 13 in the nation at the time. They went on to score victories over powerhouse out-of-state programs like Florida's Montverde Academy HS (11-2) and Georgia's Parkview HS (3-1). Potential first-rounder RHP William Schmidt (2024; LSU commit) has paced a strong staff with a fastball that has already run up to 98 mph, complemented by his big curveball. This is a deep lineup that applies pressure, top to bottom, and it has hit the ground running in 2024, launching them inside the top-3 in the nation.

Alex Armand, Louisiana Scouting Director

4 (4) Orange Lutheran (CA) Eric Borba (7-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

OLu has accrued some stellar wins to start the season, several of which came at the Prep Baseball California Spring Invitational, including against Etiwanda HS (3-2), Maranatha HS (11-3), and No. 9 Harvard-Westlake (4-2). Elsewhere, the Lancers scored four more noteworthy in-state wins against Notre Dame HS, Cypress HS, and No. 20 Huntingon Beach HS, as well as a 6-0 win over Arizona's Corona Del Sol HS. They play No. 1 Corona on Wednesday in what feels like one of the biggest 2024 matchups of the season, and they also have a three-game series with JSerra next week.

5 (3) ⬇️ IMG Academy (FL) Dave Turgeon (5-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

IMG Academy has an impressive resume, as you'd expect, and their lone loss over the weekend to Alabama's Bob Jones HS doesn't hurt them much after they began the trip with impressive wins over Barbe HS (LA), Pickens HS (GA), and Thompson HS (AL). The loud start by Catholic Baton Rouge HS (LA) helped push them down a couple spots in this update, though the Ascenders can rebound this week with contests back in state against Archbishop McCarthy HS and Doral Academy HS, both of which are ranked on Prep Baseball Florida's Power 25, and Doral's also a national rank themselves.

6 (5) Flower Mound (TX) Danny Wallace (9-2)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

After a 2-2 start, Flower Mound is back on track with seven straight wins, including a 6-2 win vs. Keller HS, which is currently the No. 6-ranked team on the Prep Baseball Texas Power 30.

7 (7) Archbishop Moeller (OH) Tim Held -
2024 SEASON PREVIEW

Our top-ranked team from the Midwest, Moeller returns five pitchers to its staff, virtually the same one that one a state title a year ago. Senior Kellan Klosterman (Notre Dame) paces the rotation, ahead of juniors Zion Theophilus (LSU), Luke Pappano (Ole Miss), and Carter Christenson (Ohio State). The trio of Klosterman, Theophilus, and Pappano return a combined 151 Ks and sub-2.00 ERA.

"The 2024 team will be anchored by its strong pitching staff," said head coach Tim Held. "We return a lot of talented and experienced arms from our 2023 state championship team. Our defense will be athletic and our offense will be good, it just needs reps to get in to a groove."

8 (8) Cathedral Catholic (CA) Gary Remiker (3-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Cathedral Catholic's season started on Feb. 27 in a 10-2 win vs. Del Norte as part of San Diego's Hilltop-Lolitas's Tournament, followed up by a 5-1 win over Poway a couple days later.

9 (9) Harvard-Westlake (CA) Jared Halpert (5-1-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Harvard-Westlake, like several of the other Cali schools even higher on this list, participated in the Prep Baseball California Spring Invitational and looked like the national powerhouses they've proven themselves to be. They opened the event with a 3-1 win over South Hills HS, and then an even more convincing 9-1 victory over Santa Margarita. They then fell to No. 5 Orange Lutheran, 4-2, before defeating JSerra by the same score in the tourney's third-place game. Since we last checked in, the Wolverines scored a win over Texas' Marcus HS, and they tied Sierra Canyon HS (CA), 4-4, before beating them outright on Thursday, 2-1.

10 (18) ⬆️ Parkview (GA) Chan Brown (8-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

One of the true powerhouses in the state of Georgia, Parkview, continues to look like one of the premier teams in the country despite taking their first loss to No. 3-ranked Catholic B.R. HS (LA) this past week. Cade Brown remains on fire to start the spring, and he is among the state's best in many offensive categories. Pitching is deep and experienced in both the rotation and bullpen that should buoy the Panthers throughout the year.

Ian Smith, Prep Baseball Georgia Asst. Director

11 (11) Farragut (TN) Matthew Buckner (1-0)
2024 SEASON PREVIEW

Farragut's the favorite to go back to back to back as 3A champs in Tennessee, rostering a whopping 14 Division-I commits; among them: seniors SS Lukas Buckner (Mississippi State), 3B Landis Davila (Mississippi State), RHP Cade O'Leary (Mississippi State), RHP Braxton Lewis (Tennessee Tech), RHP Stratton Scott (Tennessee), and OF Brannon Seigler (Tennessee).

12 (6) ⬇️ Lowndes (GA) Ryan Page (9-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

The defending 7A state champions are coming off of a 3-0 week against three strong teams from Florida, and look forward to massive matchup with No. 13-ranked Trinity Christian Academy HS (FL) this week. Senior RHP Noah Thigpen is stacking quality outings and maturing into an ace for the Vikings quickly. Stock could continue to rise for Lowndes as they move closer to region play.

Ian Smith, Georgia Asst. Scouting Director

13 (14) ⬆️ Trinity Christian JAX (FL) Jonathan Murphy (3-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Apart from an opening day 4-2 loss to the on-the-rise Sam Houston HS (LA), Trinity Christian has otherwise scored huge wins over three prominent Georgia programs: Mill Creek HS (7-4), Lambert HS (7-1), and Buford HS (12-1). They'll actually face the team ranked directly above them later this week, Lowndes HS, the reigning state champs in Georgia.

14 (15) Poly Prep (NY) Matt Roventini -
2024 SEASON PREVIEW

The Blue Devils are absolutely loaded on the mound, and they return a ton from a highly successful 2023 campaign.

"While we lost a lot of seniors, we are returning most of the core of our roster from last season," said head coach Matt Roventini. "We will miss Matt Queen (Pepperdine) atop our pitching staff, it is still deep enough to compete with anyone. Juniors Miguel Sime (LSU), and Justice DeJong (Duke) will headline our deep rotation that also includes sophomore David Hinojosa and unsigned senior Dan Desmond, amongst others. We expect big contributions from senior Masai Marshall (Northwestern), DeJong, and junior Owen ten Oever (Indiana) in the middle of our order, with junior Jack Roventini and senior John Calabrese (Bucknell) helping to spark the top of the lineup. More seniors Ethan Paluszek (Georgetown) and Gabe Basile will join returners DeJong and junior Aidan Colasante in the infield."

15 (16) ⬆️ Casteel (AZ) Matt Denny (4-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Casteel widened the gap between themselves and the No. 2-ranked team in Arizona this spring after a 3-0 start with high-scoring wins over Cactus Shadows HS, Desert Mountain HS, and Ironwood Ridge HS. They're the state's reigning 5A champs featuring a healthy mix of returning talent and gifted up-and-coming underclassmen.

16 (21) ⬆️ Huntingon Beach (CA) Benji Medure (5-2)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Despite two losses, Huntington Beach is rising in this national update, considering their two losses were narrow ones at the hands of No. 1 Corona (4-2) and No. 4 Orange Lutheran (6-3). Otherwise, the Oilers have wins over Notre Dame HS (CA) and Marcus HS (TX), among others, providing the assurance that they're still firmly among some of the best teams in the nation.

17 (19) ⬆️ Lewisburg (MS) Rusty Cagle (8-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Armed with one of the top pitching staffs in the country, featuring Super 60 participant Stone McCaughey and four other DI recruits on the staff, the Patriots carry a 0.80 ERA through their first nine games of the season. The offense is led by MLB Draft prospect, and Texas recruit, Sam Richardson as well as Memphis recruit Austin Hannigan. Lewisburg is coming off signature wins against strong competition with recent wins against Thompson HS (AL) and Germantown HS (MS). The Patriots went on to score even bigger wins against Hoover HS (AL) and Houston County HS (GA), before dropping their final game of last week, 7-1, to a talented North Broward Prep HS (FL) squad.

Colin Chamblin, Deep South Operations, Area Scout

18 (NR) ⭐ Bob Jones (AL) Jared Smith (9-2)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

The Patriots earned monster wins against nationally ranked programs No. 5 IMG Academy HS (FL), No. 19 Wesleyan Christian Academy HS (NC), as well as Cartersville HS (GA), the No. 5-ranked team in Georgia. They dropped two of their first three, but they've won eight straight since.

19 (12) ⬇️ Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC) Mo Blakeney (3-1)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Our top-ranked program from the Carolinas boasts some firepower at the front of its rotation in the form of junior right-handers Samuel Cozart and Josh Hammond (Wake Forest), and another top-ranked junior position player, OF Domanie Vann (Miami). Senior OF Sawyer Black (Liberty) is one of North Carolina's best '24s, though it's a fairly deep crop of seniors overall, which will be foundational in support of those highly gifted juniors.

20 (17) St. John's College (VA) Mark Gibbs -
2024 SEASON PREVIEW

The reiging WCAC champs are one of the best teams on the East Coast, but that's selling them short. St. John's Prep could launch themselves even further up this list in 2024, they're that talented. They debut inside the top-20 for rostering the likes of OF Adam Troch (2024; Duke), RHP Clayton Armah (2025; Auburn), RHP Hayden Kalisz (2024; Alabama), OF Nate Hawton-Henley (Maryland), INF Colin Gibbs (2024; Maryland), INF Marcus Martin (High Point). They return quite a bit to the program that won 30 games in 2023, and their '25 class gets a year older, as it contains several of the Mid-Atlantic's top prospects, like Armah, Hawton-Henley, and RHP Sean McCabe (College of Charleston). Sophomore LHP Drew Christine is an underclassman to watch here as well.

21 (24) ⬆️ Valley View (AR) Josh Allison (2-0)
3/5 UPDATE NOTES

Wasted no time announcing its presence by beating the defending 4A state champion Lonoke HS (AR), 4-2, and they defeated Maumelle HS (AR) later that same day, Thursday.
