Located in eastern Delta County, the area that led to establishment of the small town of Paonia was first explored in 1853 by a familiar name to Coloradans, Capt. John W. Gunnison, U.S. Army, who was on an expedition with topographical engineers searching for a suitable pass through the Rocky Mountains.

More than a century-and-a-half later, the road to the 2017 Class 2A championship definitely will have to go through Paonia, although there isn’t anything suitable about the heavy favorite. The Eagles, 40-8 over the past two seasons, including 22-2 in making the 2016 semifinals, will return virtually their entire team. They’re loaded and searching for a title.
