2013 Rankings are finally updated. In what ended up being a deep class of arms. I  cannot remember the last time we saw a staff comparable in arm strength as of this year’s group. I have personally seen 14 pitchers in  the top 32 touch 90. Another three I have heard have touched the elusive number. I have seen those three at 88-89 so it is very believable.  Illinois’ state director use to joke with me during the spring that I had 90 arms falling off of trees. I guess at the end of the year it is very true. This class is not only full of 90 arms it is also stacked with really good lefty arms. The top 10 is led by them with: Trey Ball, Josh Rogers, Daniel Ayers, and Tanner Tully.  You then throw in Trent Astle, Mathew Gatewood, Brian Wichman, and you are stacked with 7 division one lefties on the mound. With several other very good arms right behind them.

This class also features several elite positional players. Indiana starts in the outfield with Alex Krupa who at the end of the year next year will get more draft consideration than any other positional player because of his elite speed. Krupa went to USA baseball and dominated with his speed. He left as arguably the most athletic kid in the country. Troy Montgomery and Nolan Rogers made a huge stir early in the summer. Both outfielders were committed going into the summer. Rogers was headed to Duke and Montgomery was headed to Illinois. Both decommitted and landed different places. Rogers is now headed to Vanderbilt and Montgomery is going to Ohio State. Both outfielders are as polished complete players as there are in the outfield in the country.

Up the middle, look no further than Wes Edrington and Josh VanMeter. These two are easily the best two middle infielders in the state. Edrington is headed to Nebraska while VanMeter will play at Illinois State. It depends on the day you see each as to who is better. Behind the plate, after a light year in 2012. The 2013’s are not lacking at all. Demetrius Webb is the best catch and throw guy. His arm is electric. Isaac Crafton still holds the spot as the top catcher in the class. Crafton is a switch hitting catcher who does everything really well. Webb will be headed to Indiana while Crafton will be attending Liberty in the fall. If those two were not enough depth at the position you turn to the unsigned guys; Austin Schultz, Spencer Dull, Austin Sparks and Dylan Jones are all viable options. Schultz is the most athletic of the four and swings it really well. Dull, is a switch hitting catcher with an accurate arm. Jones is the most offensive of the four. While, Sparks is the best receiver and has handled more big time arms.

At the end of the day, I suspect we will see an Indiana record for division one commitments in a year. Just another sign, Indiana baseball is becoming bigger and bigger each year.
