Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We needed our underclassmen to fill the void of losing 5 all GCL players from the 2015 team including Anthony Bell the Player of the Year in the GCL in 2015. They exceeded our expectations as a coaching staff. Through hard work, starting in the weight room and continuing in small group work, they have developed throughout the season while playing a very strong schedule.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Our senior class will leave La Salle with the highest winning percentage in the school's 50 years of competition, with a current record of 46-15. Their drive to continue the success has been off the charts with their pride in the program being very obvious.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We’ve had a tale of two different seasons this year. We started the year 2-9. We were playing inconsistently on defense and could not get the big hit or big play on defense when we needed it. Since then the team has gone on a 15-2 run. The kids have done an excellent job of buying in the process and working hard even when times were tough. Their hard work and dedication to the little things has made the difference in our season. I’m very proud of how the have continued to battle all season and excited to see the progress the team has made.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Our team is blessed to be full of leaders on and off the field. Our senior class has done an incredible job stepping up and not allowing anything but the best from their teammates. Their constant hard work has put us in a position to succeed.  Down late in the district final to Walsh Jesuit, there was a belief that we were the better team and that we could get the job done. The players have developed an incredible trust in themselves and in each other and I believe that it showed in how they’ve been playing as of late.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: I’m excited that our group of student-athletes took this big step for our program. It’s our first regional appearance since 1996. A lot of hard work has been put in, not only on behalf of the student-athletes but also by the administration, parents, coaching staff and community. I’m excited that our boys have the opportunity to advance and keep playing ball. This time of the year we're all fighting for our seasons.  All the teams that are alive have great pitching, solid defense, and can hit the baseball. It should be a fun week.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Our region is filled with many top-level programs and coaches, 2 of which were in our conference last year before we moved to the Suburban League. Jackson, Mayfield, and Solon are all #1 seeds from their districts and all have had great seasons. Each team has enough talent, especially on the hill, to beat anyone on a given day. We’re excited for the opportunity to come out and compete against them.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach:  In the district final we were down 5-1 to Walsh Jesuit starting the top of the 6th inning. We then sent 10 batters to the plate with 7 hits and scored 6 runs to take a 7-5 lead. Senior RHP Logan Huffman pitched the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings facing 9 batters, striking out 9, all while not allowing a baserunner to get the win.

#1 Massillon Jackson (28-0)

Season Facts:

  • Division I Poll Champions for PBR
  • USA Today #16 / Baseball America #20 / OHSBCA #1

  4. Dillon Dingler - .363 BA, 10 2B, 1 HR, 23 R, 23 RBIs, 11 SB
  5. Justin Johnston - .361 BA, 3 2B, 9 R, 12 RBIs

The Arms:

  1. Christian Specht - 48 IP, 9-0, 0.73 ERA, 51 K
  2. Glen Richardson - 34 IP, 7-0, 0.21 ERA, 50 K
  3. Kyle Nicolas - 25.1 IP, 3-0, 0.55 ERA, 37 K
  4. Jon Conkle - 24.1 IP, 3-0, 1.15 ERA, 20 K
  5. Jake Pollotta - 15 IP, 5 SV, 0.93 ERA, 12 K

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: This team has had an outstanding approach throughout the off-season and into the regular season. We have 3 three-year guys in Sam Miller, Jake Pallotta, and Christian Specht who played on the state title team in 2014 and Elite 8 team in 2015. We return multiple starters back from the Elite 8 team including Jon Conkle, Nate Cobb, Zach Mottice, Mike Mathieu, Dillon Dingler and Sam, Jake and Christian.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: The leadership on this team is very excited for the opportunity to head back to Munson for the regionals.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: This is our 3rd straight trip to the Sweet 16 which is very hard to do in our district.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Stow, Mayfield and Solon are all are playing outstanding baseball right now. They are well coached and fundamentally sound.

  3. Hunter Kuzak, LHP, 2016
  4. Brian D’Andrea, RHP, 2017
  5. Nick DeJesus, RHP, 2016

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We knew pitching would be the team’s strength coming into the season, and it has not disappointed (1.95 team ERA). With a lineup of young and inexperienced hitters to start the year offense was going to be a process, but as the kids got more at-bats their approach has improved, especially the last 12 games, and that has taken some pressure off of our pitchers. Defensively, we are much improved from last year, and have not committed an error in our four tournament games thus far.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Our seniors, especially our three captains, Casey McConihe, Michael Burgess, and Nick DeJesus, have been phenomenal. They are playing with a sense of urgency and purpose, and bringing the younger guys along for the ride. They have made this team a family in every sense of the word. Everyone is playing for each other, and right now they’re having a lot of fun.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We had lost in the district championship game the previous two seasons (both to St. Ed’s), so to finally get over that hump feels great. The kids, the school, and the community are excited to see what this team can do. The support we’ve gotten is unbelievable. In our two district games, there were over 500 people in attendance each game, and the atmosphere was incredible.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: At this point, there are only really good teams remaining. The team that makes the fewest mistakes, whether it’s at the plate, on the mound, in the field, or on the base paths, is going to win. We’re excited to be able to continue to play great competition and see what we’re made of.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We haven’t committed an error in our four tournament games thus far, so hopefully that trend will continue. Evan Shawver has continued to be a force on the mound. Going back to last year, he has pitched in four tournament games and has pitched 27 innings without allowing a run. The district championship game against Avon was a lot of fun. We were down 4-0, batting in the top of the 5th with two outs and nobody on base. We rallied for 6 runs in the blink of an eye: Michael Burgess walk, Evan Shawver triple, Mark Harris double, Casey McConihe single, Xavier Moore double, Isaac Walts single, Joe Masters double. We were able to add an insurance run in both the 6th and 7th innings for the 8-4 victory.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: We’re excited to be here, but definitely not satisfied. We’re looking forward to seeing all our fans travel to BGSU and continue to support these fantastic student-athletes.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We had a lot of questions coming into this season after graduating 9 seniors, 6 of which were starters, from last season. When we began off-season strength and conditioning in November and we had as many as 30 kids coming out to join us in the weight room, it was encouraging, and it communicated to our coaching staff that we were going to have a dedicated group of baseball players this season who desired to work hard every day. And that has been the characteristic of this team. They enjoy practicing, and they enjoy just being together in general.

We began our season with a lot more “downs” than “ups.” We knew we were going to have a tough league schedule in which we’d have to battle for every win, and we also had a very competitive non-league schedule. Early in the season we lost several close ballgames, but then we eventually started to find ways to win those. And as long as we’re winning them at this time of the season we’re fine with the way things played out early on. It has prepared us to be in the position we are in today.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: We have just 2 seniors, Hunter Mullins and Trey Keiffer, but they have both provided a lot of leadership, especially during some critical times in the season when we needed an extra boost. During rain days we would have team meetings and skull sessions, and the encouragement from our senior leaders was very timely.

Additionally, we have a very strong junior class. While one or two guys may stand up at times and provide a moment of leadership when the team needs it, these guys have always stood on an equal plane, looking to each other and seeing one another as a true family. They are “baseball” guys, with baseball minds and hearts. They understand the game and they're not just teammates, but truly best friends who are playing a game they love and have grown up together playing.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We are thrilled. The community is excited for us. Alumni are pumped. The kids have received lots of congratulations and well-wishes from classmates, teachers, alums, and even area rivals who are glad to see a local team advance to the regionals. This is the first time since 2004 since Athens High School has been to the baseball regional semifinal. Even more, no Athens High School team has ever advanced to the regional championship, so this group has the opportunity to make school history this week.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Gant Memorial Stadium is an historic site for baseball. Lots of great teams and players have played there and then gone on to play in the state championship. We want our guys to see it as a special opportunity to follow in those footsteps.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We’ve had some key pitches, big defensive plays, and key hits in all 4 of our tournament games to get us to where we are. The beauty of that is they haven’t all come from the same person. Any guy on this squad in any given moment has the ability to step up in a big way.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: We’ve been so blessed to have tremendous support from our community in this tournament run. The players’ and coaches’ families and extended family members have come out. Athens Bulldogs students, parents, youth (Athens Sandlot) players, coaches, teachers, alumni, local businesses… have all been very kind and supportive. We just hope to keep making them proud. Athens has had a long, rich tradition in baseball in southeastern Ohio. It’s a great baseball town, and this team is helping to revive that spirit.

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: Our team has really matured over the past year especially the second half of this season. We start 5 sophomores most nights and are very pleased with their progression  this past year.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Our 2 seniors, Jake and Joe Henderson, have been invaluable teaching our team how to go to work every day and be great teammates. They have laid the groundwork for this team to succeed.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: This team has been finding ways to win, doing the little things you need to do to be successful. We are very proud of this accomplishment.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: The regional field is very strong once again and you better be ready to play at a high level for 7 innings or whatever it takes.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?

  3. Matt Jackman, RHP, 2016
  4. Alex Ludwick, RHP, 2017
  5. Justin Beckwith, RHP, 2017

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We have seen a steady improvement from last season (14-14) from the start of tryouts this year. Although talented, we were very young team last year. Every player played at a higher level travel ball schedule and the confidence was very noticeable this year coming in. Once players believe they have arrived as a team it's easy for them to buy into the team goals and plans for this season. All the indoor practices as well as the mental side of preparation was key to starting off and maintaining a strong push to where we are getting ready for regionals.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Since we have a senior-heavy team, it was very early that they took charge as the leaders. Marc Ochoa, Mike Kilner and Kevin Houdek were the three that stood out and make this team go. All seniors and all with the same leadership skills by their play and vocalizing making sure that their team is ready for all games. To see them grow into the young men they are becoming in these roles also give the coaches a confident feeling knowing that we are ready to handle any hurdles thus far in this season.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: It has been 4 years of hard work to get this program back to what it was when coach Zofka hired me as his assistant coach in the early 2000s. For the 5 years I was here before, we attended regionals all 5 years and made it to state 1 of those years.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: With Defiance, Bishop Waterson, Lexington and ourselves this has shaped up to being one of the toughest regionals in the state. All teams possess strengths that will help make each game a very highly-competitive contest.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Our pitching staff has been the backbone of our run this far through the region. Thus far our staff has given up two runs. In the district championship game Kyle Wiszniewski was two outs away from a perfect game only to give up a hit with 1 out in the top of the 7th and ended the game on another ground ball double play.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: With the 21-5 record come some conference recognition. We had 5 all-conference players 1st team we had 4 conference players on the 2nd team and 3 on honorable mention. I also want to point out that Kevin Houdek is the conference MVP for the 2016 season.

The Arms:

  1. Hunter Biddle, RHP, 2017 - 51 IP, 6-2, 1 SV, 1.23 ERA, 42 K

  5. Brady Kunkle, RHP, 2016 - 20.2 IP, 3-0, 1 SV, 12 K

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We had to replace 3 big hitters and senior captains in Evan Lee, Nick Adams, and Josh Verspoor who were our 3, 4, 5-hole hitters and middle of the field defenders. Our biggest improvements came in overall team running game and small ball to make up for the loss of power. We also had a huge improvement in senior Matt Frazier who became our #2 pitcher and hit .313. Our team defense remained as good as last year’s. Our pitching as a team improved.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Senior Joey Vore emerged as a vocal leader in the dugout about midway through the season. Senior Matt Frazier became a leader on the field. Juniors Hunter Biddle, Jacob Odson, and Austin Eifrid became underclassmen leaders on the field.  The team has solid chemistry and it shows during close games.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We emerged through a meat grinder of a district and defeated some of the toughest teams. What prepared us is that we faced many district teams in the regular season and the fact that our league is so good featuring several D1 programs. We thought we had a regional team last year so it is great to get there this year.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: We have scouted Padua and they are solid. Obviously Defiance or Watterson will be in the regional final. We have to play our game and play defense to give ourselves a chance.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We defeated the #1 seed and #18 team in the state, Vermilio,n on their field 8-4. That sent the message to the district and our kids that we are for real.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: This team has continued to develop from last summer through this spring. The seniors accepting their roles has been a key ingredient for us this spring.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Shay Smiddy, Connor Stykemain and Abram Smith have been our leaders. They are all different, but bring tremendous leadership skills to the table.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: Getting to the Sweet 16 in my opinion tops winning a league title. This is when your community really starts to pay attention to baseball.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: We will be facing one of the best lefty’s in the state in Matt Dockman. We know Watterson is well coached and will play fundamental baseball. We don’t know much about Lexington or Padua at this point as our focus is on Watterson.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We have only given up 1 run thus far.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We lost 9 seniors from last year's Final Four team, losing 3 of our top pitchers. We are a young team with only 2 seniors in the starting lineup. We also start 2 sophomores.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Our captains, Christian Kroger and Alex Gabel, have been outstanding leaders. It is tough to deal with peers at this level, but they know what it takes to advance in the tournament and have spoken to our guys about the experience and what it means.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: The team has been driven by the different "polls", both the Coaches poll and the PBR poll. Finishing the season ranked 24th in the PBR poll has been spoken about numerously and the kids feel that our strength of schedule has not been respected. We hope to prove these polls wrong as we continue into the tournament. A lot of teams ranked above us our now getting ready for summer baseball and that has been a driving force.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: This group of kids have been persistent hard workers from day 1. Whether we were in the gym due to rain/snow at Florida playing in the heat, or on the fields in Ohio, the kids have just worked incredibly hard.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: We have a tremendous group of seniors who have worked hard all year to keep the team on track to where they believe we should be. I think they had one goal in mind and that was to win the district and see how much longer the ride could last after that. Anthony Calcagni, Jared Burkert, and Eric White have been the spokesmen for the team and really never except anything but hard work and dedication. They are the guys we turn to when things get tough, and they always have found a way to motivate the team. They lead by example and by voice, and that’s been very important this season.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We’re excited. It was something we knew was possible, but with baseball you just never know. We’ve been in a lot of close games this year and we feel that has made us a more prepared and generally better team. We’re excited for the opportunity again.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Haven’t had an opportunity to look too deep into it yet. At this point all the teams here are very skilled, and you have to play your best game to advance and that is our goal.

  10. Andrew Roell, RHP, 2017

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: This group of guys have been a lot of fun to coach. It has been an up and down year in regards to wins and losses and we definitely had a low point midway through the year that could have gone one way or the other. The leaders on our team chose to have it go in the right direction and we haven’t looked back since. Our strength and conditioning coach, coach Stricker, has us stronger and more athletic than ever and we have really hit our stride in the post season.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: The unique part of this team is that we have leadership from at least one member from each class we have on the team (2018, 2017, 2016). We have a large number of seniors on our roster but our leadership is not limited to just seniors. Part of the growth process this year has been getting comfortable with this dynamic and younger players understanding that they do not have to wait until their senior year to step up and embrace the leadership role. With that being said, our seniors have done an outstanding job of modeling tremendous work ethic, leadership and a true love for the game of baseball.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We had a very talented team in 2015 and were eliminated from the tournament last year in our first game. This was the first time in a very long time (25 years area) that this occurred so it was something that many associated with our program had not experienced before. Every day still involved in the state tournament is a true blessing and we are extremely humbled to have the opportunity to continue our season.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Very challenging regional field. All four teams are very solid.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add, feel free to send it.. Remember, this is for your players, your coaching staff and your community.
Coach: It is an honor to coach at Badin and be a part of a baseball program with so much history and pride. Our players understand the unique opportunity they have each day they get to put on the Badin uniform. Our baseball alumni are very involved in our success and they drive us to represent the “B” each and every day.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: The guys have been hitting and doing voluntary workouts together since November. The seniors have bonded very well.  The have truly become a “Team” and I believe that this is the reason we have advanced this far. Many of these guys have been playing varsity baseball since they were sophomores, so they are ready.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: We have 11 seniors. Each has become a leader in his own way. Will Vogelgesang has taken the greatest role of team leader and the rest of the seniors have followed. The big thing to me is each player accepting their individual role on this team. It is truly the player’s team and not mine. I have been very happy how they have responded to their roles.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We have had a very good year, winning the GCL for the first time outright. We then won sectionals and districts. We have talked about getting to state since the beginning of the season so this (getting to regionals) is just step 3. We have 2 more steps to go.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Badin is always good and our big rival. I know that St. Francis DeSales has had a very good year and Tippecanoe has been playing great lately and has had excellent pitching with each win. Should be three great games.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We lost some very good players from last year’s team so this past off-season was important that guys got accustomed to either a new position or the speed of varsity compared to JV. They all have done a great job at getting extra work in and getting better each day. We have also matured a lot through the year. We have a good amount of underclassmen that start and, even though they got some time in as freshmen, they have really matured a lot through this year.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: We have three captains this year,. Brett McEldowney, Adam Lyons and Jared Niekamp. They have been great with leading the team by example and showing the younger guys how to go about the ballpark. The guys look up to them and either when we are down or need a pump up, they are the ones who get everyone together and get us back on track.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: It’s big for our program but the boys are not satisfied with just being a qualifier for regionals.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: It’s a very tough field. We are familiar with the teams but at this point in the year everyone is playing their best baseball and we have to be ready to go and win every inning.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We have had some great pitching performances by Brett McEldowney and Cole Niekamp. Brett has gotten us two wins so far against Greenview and Summit and Cole against Arcanum. Combined they have only given up 2 runs in the 3 games we have played. We have also had some big hits in key situations by Jake Watren in the Arcanum game to score the lone run and Keaton McEldowney hitting a big home run to put us up against Summit.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: The boys have been working for this all year and now that we have made it, they are ready to play.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We’re excited for our program to reach regionals for the 2nd time in 4 years. There are so many great programs in our league and in the state and we’re trying to get to the level of consistency they have every season.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: We’re excited about the competition in our regionals. First we get to play a great Minford team. They’ve had a great season and continue to show why they are one of the better teams in the state. The other side features 2 great teams as well. Hiland is the #1 ranked team in the state and Wheelersburg’s always one of the best teams in the state.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far (no-hitters, key hits, outstanding performances, comebacks etc)?
Coach: In our first sectional game, Dustin Redish pitched a no-hitter against Bellaire. We have gotten outstanding performances from Dustin Redish and Austyn Porter on the mound. We have also done a nice job of fielding the ball behind them.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: All these kids have been working out on their own all winter, getting in shape physically as well as hitting and taking ground balls. We have a young team starting 2-3 freshmen and 1 sophomore who have exceeded our expectations and rounded off our team to help get us where we are now.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Andrew Abrahamowicz, a junior RHP, has taken the ball in every big game we’ve had this year. He’s a bulldog on the mound and gives our team the confidence that we can beat anyone when he’s on the mound.

Sean Darmafall, senior CF and lead-off hitter, sets the table for us. He’s a 2015 All-Ohio OF. He’s our catalyst on offense that gets things going for us early in the game. When Sean gets on he usually scores and gives our team that lead we need early in the game.

James Rickard, a senior 2nd basemen, leads our defense. He makes ESPN web-gem plays weekly and always seems to make a big play in a big game that sparks all the other guys on the team and puts our defense at another level.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: We are confident that we can play with any of the teams in the tournament. We pride ourselves on great defense and quality pitching. If we play the way we are capable of playing anything can happen.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Andrew Abrahamowicz is 2-0 with a save in the tournament. He pitched a 2-hit 10-strikeout performance in the district semifinals and came in and earned the save in the district finals.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: Being a smaller school, the majority of our players play multiple sports. We tried to get together as often as possible but it was difficult. In the short time we were together, we worked hard to implement everything we wanted. It took us awhile (losing our first 2 games of the year) but once we got back into the flow of baseball, we have been playing very well.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Having 8 seniors is an absolute luxury. We have 3 players playing college baseball next year and I really depend on them to get things done and take charge. I have challenged them all year and they have not let us down yet.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: It is a testament to all of our players and coaches that have worked so hard to make it possible. It hasn’t been done in awhile (since 1999) and most of our players weren’t even born yet, but the support we have received has been unbelievable. The school and community has really gotten behind our season and made it a lot of fun.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: It is tough. Every team is solid and well coached. We know we will have to play our best to give ourselves a chance.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: We have had a couple of games and performances that have stood out. Currently we are on a 16-game win streak and haven’t lost since the middle of April. With that being said, everyone on our team has contributed. Our pitching has been outstanding with a team ERA of 1.55. Our senior catcher (Aaron Spidell) was an All-League outfielder last year and moved to catcher this year out of necessity. He had never caught before in his life and has done a great job handling our pitching staff and calling pitches. Big moments this year were winning our conference for the first time since 1999 on our home field (4-2 win over Hillsdale) with senior Parker Snyder throwing a complete game on the mound. Also, we have won two 11-inning games this year, including the district semifinal game against Chippewa where senior pitcher Markus Schlabach pitched the first 10 innings.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: Our administration has done a great job supporting us all year and we really appreciate all of the parents and fans that have been following us. It has been sort of an unreal season that we just wish to continue and get to the next game. That has been our motto in the tournament, take it one game at a time and see where that takes us. So far it has been working.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: Last year's early tourney exit fueled our off-season intensity.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Austin Swift is clearly the leader of this team. His work ethic at practice, in the weight room and on the field has been an excellent example for our team.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: Our coaching staff took over the program three years ago. The team started 3-11, so it has been a long road. That is what makes this trip to regionals so special.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: I believe when you get to this level in the tournament that all the teams are very close talent-wise. I tell our kids to limit our mistakes and play good fundamental baseball and we will have a chance.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Austin Swift's sectional final game was unbelievable. Perfect game, struck out all 15 batters with only TWO foul balls.

  4. Daedrick Matthews, 2016 - 26 IP, 5-0, 2.15 ERA, 16 K

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: The team started the season with several injuries to key players, D.J. Yates recovering from ACL surgery from an injury during football season, Nate Thomas (our catcher for two years), Jacob Molnar (a projected starter) and Ryan Lane (arm trouble). Many adjustments needed to be made, moving players to different positions and bringing up JV players. The players knew they would have to face adversity at the beginning of the season. They also felt if they persevered they would be a tournament-ready team by the end of the season.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach:The team leaders are my seniors and junior Ryan Lane. These young men led by example by encouraging one another and remaining calm under pressure. All these young men made key plays and had clutch hits all season.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: This is a team that has worked hard and is very grateful to make it this far. We thank God, our parents, and community for making so many good ballplayers. We have had several good teams the past few years that fell short, so each player knows how special this is. The players play for each other and that's what makes this special. Each player and coach has sacrificed for the team and have been blessed.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: All the teams that make it this far are great teams. They are all well coached and loaded with talent. These are the best teams in the state. Each game should be a highly competitive game.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: Our team came into the off-season with high expectations after the school's first state appearance a year ago and many returning key players. With us losing 5 starters to graduation, we had several new varsity players. It took us a while to find out where all the pieces would fit.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: The seniors have really stepped up as the season has progressed. Our team is a tight group and we have gelled into a team with great chemistry. We have several sophomores who have stepped up as well and help form leadership.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: This is the second year in a row we have advanced to regionals. Our sectional and district were very tough to get out of with New Bremen, St. Henry and Minster. We are very happy to represent the MAC.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: We are happy to advance to regionals, but we know it doesn't get any easier. Every team is here for a reason ... They are very good and do a lot of the things very well.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Every year is a different journey. Pitching and defense is what has gotten us here. Our pitching staff hasn't allowed an earned run in the tournament.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: We look forward to competing against some of the best teams in the state of Ohio at Patrick Henry High School this week. Our community has been great and has supported us all the way. We will represent Fort Recovery and look forward to seeing a sea of purple in the stands.

  5. Kasey Williams, RHP, 2017 - 17.1 IP, 1-0, 21 K

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: The development of consistency in team play has taken a little longer then I thought it would.  With a veteran team, I was not expecting us to be as inconsistent as we were during the regular season. We have found that consistency that had eluded us all season and are beginning to play really well.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: The 5 seniors that I have on my roster have been tremendous leaders throughout the season. I have asked a few of them to change roles on the team and though it was initially met with some concerns, they have found that those moves have made us a better team. The bottom 4 in my lineup, which consists of 3 seniors and 1 junior, have been the driving force in our offense lately. They are the ones that get the rallies started for the guys at the top of the order to drive in. Their leadership in the district tournament is the reason we are playing in the regionals. I have a group of juniors that has been very instrumental in our success this year and that is a carry-over from the success the junior class has had on the football field and on the basketball court.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: Having been to the district tournament the last 6 years and in 3 of those years losing to a team that eventually made it to the final four, and with how this year's district final game was progressing, I was beginning to think that I would never be able to deliver a trip to the regionals. Our D-IV district has traditionally been a very strong district and it was no different this year. We are advancing to the regionals for the first time since 2007 and by doing so, it removes a big monkey off of our backs. It validates all the hard work that these players have put in during the off-season and it continues the success that the athletic teams have had this year at Ayersville.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: A first-class field.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: In the district final game, we were down to our last strike before we were able to produce 4 straight hits to win the game. Down 6 to 4 entering the bottom of the 7th, we had a guy at second base with 2 outs and a 3-and-2 count on my hitter and then had 4 straight hits to win the game. This all occurred after the left fielder for Edon had taken an RBI double away from us on a diving catch in the 4th inning and the center fielder from Edon took away what would have been a for-sure double and possible triple in the top of the 7th with a diving catch in right-center field. It was a crazy turn of events. It also occurred after our best hitter was struck out with the tying runs on base in scoring position in the bottom of the 6th to end the inning. Getting to the regionals in that fashion shows just how tough this team is to beat right now.

Danville (18-8)

  8. Drew Printz, DH - .327 BA, 2 2B, 10 R, 6 RBIs for Jordan Stimpert, RF
  9. Colton Boone, C - .244 BA, 4 2B, 14 R, 6 RBIs

The Arms:

  1. Kenton Mickley - 32 IP, 3-0, 0.87 ERA, 35 K
  2. Skyler Durbin - 29 IP, 3-1, 1.69 ERA, 30 K
  3. Tyler Mickley - 24 IP, 3-0, 3.20 ERA, 26 K

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: Danville has been a dominate football school for years. This year they we were in the Final 4 while also advancing to the district finals in basketball. The kids have done a great job of jumping right into baseball. We started out really slow with a 2-6 record, but after getting into league play and going 11-0 in the league, it really helped building confidence. Our senior class has played very well this season, with breakout performances from CF Brandon Holt and Anthony McClain. Kenton Mickley has carried his outstanding career in high school, only striking out 5 times in his high school career, while hitting over .450 in his 4 years. This year he is hitting .520.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: We have a great good of 5 seniors on the team, Brandon Holt, Colton Boone, Kenton Mickley, Anthony McClain and Ridge Durbin. They have done a great job of helping out with the underclassmen, including the 3 sophomores and freshman that start. Each bring a different type of leadership to the table and helps balance everything out. This senior class has worked so hard the last 4 years in helping the baseball program grow and becoming a team with competitive abilities.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: When we started the season we had three goals, a 20-win season, a league title and a district final game. We have meet 2 or 3, only winning 18 games is nothing to be sad about. It is another great season, coming off our 19-win season last year,. we lost in the district semifinals to Fisher, so it was great to get a win against them. Being in the regional is something new for us. I look at it as playing with house money. Our kids where not picked to be there and nobody knows them. Our regional has the number 1 and 2 teams in the state, Toronto and Newark Catholic. It will be a hard road for us but the good news is that our kids have taken the last 7 days to get ready and have really worked hard. Should be a great time for everyone involved.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Kenton Mickley threw a 1-hit shutout in the district finals. Skyler Durbin had a 3-hit shutout in the district semi which we won in 5 innings.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We had great participation in open gym workouts in early February, several key players played on the basketball team that reached the district final, which was played March 5. I also like to see our kids play deep into the tournament, whether it be basketball, football, golf, wrestling, track, or cross country. The experience they gain playing the tougher competition in other sports is valuable to their baseball season. So in other words, many people would say we got a late start to the baseball season (Feb. 22nd official start), but I tend to look at it a little differently.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: Devyn Farley and Clay Hayes are big leaders on this team, they were  instrumental in driving our open gym sessions and they built the foundation for our team unity. Isaac Huffman, our catcher, is our field general and does a nice job controlling a game from behind the plate. He means so much to our defensive schemes, and does a nice job with the pitchers.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: This being my first year as the head coach, we set goals: win TVC (Tri Valley Conference Hocking Division, win sectional title, win district title, win regional title, and win state title. You might say we set the bar high, but I say you have to set goals and put the work in and compete to achieve them.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: Looks like a very strong regional. Newark Catholic is coming in as the defending Division IV state champions, Toronto is ranked #1 in Division IV, and Danville, who defeated Lancaster Fisher Catholic, a #1 seed in their district.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: I would like to thank the Waterford Community for all the support. This started last August 4th with approximately $30,000.00 donated to renovate and upgrade our baseball field. This was completely volunteer work with local businesses, fans, and parents coming together to enhance the experience of our baseball student/athletes.

PBR: Thoughts on the season?
Coach: We played a tough/competitive schedule that I believe got us where we are today. We did go through a week where we were in somewhat of a rut and lost three in a row. This cost us the league title but we have recovered since with an eight-game win streak..

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: Advancing to the regionals is such an awesome experience and am just thrilled the kids get to experience it. Teams raise their level of play and it is just exciting baseball.

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.
Coach: We lost 7 seniors after last year's 20-8 season. We had a leadership void that we didn’t know who would fill in that role. It's taken some time through the year but I really feel like our leaders are coming out of their shells and taking control of this team. We have played a tough non-league schedule as we always do. We feel like the kids need to see and play vs the best to become the best. We have taken some hits but also had some close games vs some of the top teams around including Anna, Versailles, Union County Ind., and Minster. All have prepared us for this tournament run.

PBR: Talk about the leaders on your team and what they have meant.
Coach: My seniors (only 4 of them) are more leaders by example. They come in and get their work done but not the vocal guys you sometimes need. Our junior class has really grown up over the last couple months and have become the vocal guys. We preach the mental game day in and day out. They kids are buying in and that really has made a difference for us.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: It’s a great accomplishment for the program, the school, and community. This is the 3rd ever trip for us and the 2nd in 4 years. I try and tell the kids to enjoy the moment because this doesn’t happen all the time. We have had good teams in the 4 years that I've been on staff (2 as an assistant) and it doesn’t always work out the way you want it. The best team never wins, it’s the team that plays the best.

PBR: Thoughts on your regional field?
Coach: We have 3 PBR top 25 teams in this thing, 2 in the top 10. It's going to take 2 very good games by whatever team makes it out of here.

PBR: Is there anything of interest worth mentioning about your tournament run thus far?
Coach: Our pitching staff hasn’t given up an earned run (in the tournament) yet. I think that is pretty impressive no matter who you have played. If we play defense and pitch like that then we have a chance to compete. That’s all you can ask for.

PBR: Talk about your team's development from last summer, winter or the beginning of the season to now in late May.

Coach: The leaders have been outstanding this year. They hold each other accountable and have really come together as a team.

PBR: Thoughts on your program advancing to regionals?
Coach: Any time you can advance this far it is good for the program. In a small community like ours it can help to build excitement for the program.
