2023 MHSAA Tournament: Division 2 State Final - Grand Rapids Christian vs University Liggett

EAST LANSING - Grand Rapids Christian took the next step.

The Eagles, state runners-up a year ago, are the Division 2 champion in Michigan after scoring a pair of first inning unearned runs and holding on for a 2-1 win over University Liggett on Saturday.

Ty Uchman reached on a one-out error, went to third on another Liggett error on a walk to Jackson Isaacs and Cam Seth tripled both runners home for the lone two runs by the top-rated team in the state.

Uchman and Seth made the lead hold up with Uchman, a George Mason commit, picking up the win with four innings of five-hit pitching, giving up one run in the fifth before Seth came on to throw three frames of no-hit baseball for the save.

Jarren Purify hit a double down the left-field line and a Reggie Sharp single to right put runners on first and third with no outs in the fifth, ending the time on the mound for Uchman. Seth then came in to induce an Oliver Service RBI fielder’s choice for the only run of the game by the Knights. After the Liggett catcher stole second base, a strikeout and ground out ended the inning.

Service again reached second base in the seventh on a walk and passed ball, but a ground out to second gave the Eagles their four state crown, the others coming in 1985, 2012 and 2013.

It marked the third second-place state finish by Liggett, winners of six state championships.

Minnesota signee Kyle Remington had two singles and Isaacs, a Western Michigan commit, had a double to go along with the Seth triple for Grand Rapids Christian, which was defeated by Forest Hills Eastern 3-0 in the 2022 D-2 title game.

Jake Martin hit a pair of singles for Liggett, the third-ranked team in the state which beat Forest Hills Eastern 2-0 in the semifinals on Friday.
