Prep Baseball Report

86 Native Hoosiers in Organized Baseball at Season's Midway Point

Pete Cava
PBR Indiana Correspondent

There are two days each year when no games are played in either Major League Baseball, the National Basketball League, the National Football League or the National Hockey League.

Can you name them?

The answer, of course, is the day before and the day after big-league baseball’s All-Star Game.  Now that the mid-season break is over, it’s time to take stock of where the 86 Hoosier natives in organized ball are playing.

Eighteen of Indiana’s sons currently wear major league uniforms – 13 players, four coaches and a pair of managers.  At the All-Star break, the two Hoosier-born skippers were at opposite ends of the spectrum.  Craig Counsell’s Milwaukee Brewers were half a game behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division, while Don Mattingly and the Miami Marlins were in the N.L. East’s basement.

One of the four Hoosier natives in the big leagues never played a day in the majors:  Butler University alumnus Radley Haddad, who serves as a bullpen catcher and coaching assistant for the New York Yankees.

Four of the 13 Indiana-born big-league players are currently on the injured list:  Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart and pitchers Sean Manaea (Athletics), Jerad Eickhoff (Phillies) and Josh Rogers (Orioles).  Rogers is expected to undergo elbow surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

Three Hoosier natives have debuted in the majors so far this season:  Reds utilityman JoshVanMeter, Indians pitcher Zach Plesac and Rays infielder Mike Brosseau.  VanMeter and Plesac have since returned to the minors.

Including VanMeter and Plesac, seven players in the minors have major league experience – five in Class AAA, and two more in Class AA.  In addition, four minor league coaches are big-league veterans.

The list of 86 players, coaches and managers includes everyone from the majors to the rookie leagues, as well as three who are currently in extended spring training.

In addition to those 86, three Indiana-born ex-big leaguers currently serve as minor-league coordinators.  They are JD Closser, the Yankees minor league catching coordinator;  Jim Eppard, minor league hitting instructor for the Athletics;  and Nationals  minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator Gary Thurman.
