A Breakdown of Recruiting Classes at Indiana's D-1 Schools

Today is National Signing Day, a day where high school senior athletes of all sports can officially sign their National Letters of Intent to play collegiate sports.  Below is a list of 2013 baseball players out of Indiana that are committed to Division One schools within the state.

Butler University:  Butler currently has one Indiana kid committed, Danny Pobereyko (Bishop Noll). Pobereyko is a very interesting prospect with a good arm action.   He is a 6-foot-4, RHP that sits 83-86 mph, with a plus changeup.

Ball State:  The Cardinals currently have three ranked players committed in the state of Indiana. Coach Maloney is in his first recruiting class and has put together a group of athletic players with No. 10 Zach Plesac (Crown Point) being the highlight of the class.  Plesac is an athletic righty with a ton of arm strength and has been up to 91-92 mph with his fastball on multiple occasions.   Matthew Eppers (Elkhart Central) is another highly ranked prospect, No. 35, committed to the Cardinals. Eppers is an athletic, tall outfielder that runs a 6.86 sixty and is 86 from the outfield.   Caleb Stayton (Elkhart Christian Academy), No. 45, will join Plesac and Eppers at Ball State.  Stayton is a strong bodied, left handed hitter with a really quick bat. Stayton is consistently around a 2.0-2.1 pop time.

Evansville:  The Aces currently have two Indiana prospects verbally committed to their baseball program.  The first and most recent commitment is RHP pitcher Brandon Kelley.   Kelley is home schooled and from the Evansville area.   He is currently ranked No.62 in the 2013 class.  Kelley plays summer baseball with the Indiana Prospects and has been up to 87-88. The 6-foot-2 RHP should add depth on the mound and compete for playing time early. The second commit is another local product out of Castle HS, Joe Redburn, son of current Aces softball head Coach Mark Redburn.   Redburn is an overall solid baseball player who makes the routine plays.  The more you see him play, the more you like him as a player.

Indiana:   The Hoosiers’ class features the No.3 prospect in Indiana, Alex Krupa.   Krupa is an outfielder from Greenwood HS that hits from the left side, and is best known for his foot speed. Krupa has ran a 6.5 sixty and has been clocked as high as a 3.7 down the line.   His hands are lightning quick at the plate, and could be a potential impact player early on campus.   The second signing of the Indiana 2013 class is Demetrius Webb (North Central), currently the No.19 player in the 2013 class.  Webb is the best catch and throw guy in the Midwest.  He possesses plus arm strength and is athletic behind the plate. The third player of the class is Reece Phillips (Edgewood), a 6-foot LHP that was hurt most of the spring, but when healthy was 83-86.

Indiana State:  The Sycamores anticipate signing one of the most winning pitchers in the last two years, Ryan Keaffaber (Northwood).   Keaffaber is a crafty lefty that just knows how to pitch, not losing a game the past two seasons.  During his sophomore year he compiled 119ks to just 12BBs. Keaffaber is currently the No.50 ranked prospect in the 2013 class.

IPFW:  The Mastodons currently have the largest class of Indiana players. The highest ranked and most recent commit is No. 41 FW Snider RHP Brandon Phelps.  Phelps is an athletic, raw arm that was up to 88 this spring.  His slider shows potential to be a plus pitch.  Jackson Boyce out of Leo HS is the next highest ranked player committed to IPFW at No. 47.   He is athletic and overall solid both in the field and at the plate.  Shannon Baker is a wide bodied catcher/1B from Northridge HS also committed to the Mastodons, and is a potential power bat for IPFW.   Brock Logan (Northridge) is the fourth in state commit for IPFW.  He is a strong left handed hitting first baseman that shows quick hands and gets to extension well.   Logan should develop power at the next level and could be a middle of the lineup hitter in the coming years.

Notre Dame:  The Irish currently have one commit in SS/RHP Kyle Fiala (Carmel).   Fiala is currently ranked No.29 in the 2013 class.  He is a 6.7 runner with good arm strength.   On the mound Fiala was up to 86 this past year.  Though he was recruited as an infielder, he will be given the opportunity to do both at Notre Dame.

Purdue:  No. 18 Tyler Huth is the lone commitment from Indiana for the Boilermakers.   Huth is a 6-foot-7, RHP from Fort Wayne Northrop and has been as high as 85-88 mph, but has been rumored to have touched 92 this fall.  Off size and velocity alone, Huth has an outside chance of being a drafted out of high school.

Valparaiso:  The Crusaders currently have one of the most talented players in the state committed to their program, Matthew Gatewood (South Decatur).  Gatewood is the No. 26 ranked player in the 2013 class.  He is one of the most athletic player in his class, running a 6.65 sixty, and has been up to 91 on the mound from the left side. If Coach Woodson can harness that velocity in the strike zone, he could have a high draft pick in Gatewood.
