American Legion State Championship- Day 3

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

Centennial Bulldogs (10) vs Rancho Rams (0)

It was all ’20 Zack Simon for the Bulldogs in a 5-inning complete game outing. Simon tossed a no hitter in a run rule shortened game. The sturdy bodied right hander pitched comfortably with his fastball 86-88, facing one batter over the minimum and striking out six. Offensively, every Bulldog starter contributed with a hit, led by ’20 Anthony Martinez with two hits. ’20 Travis Rice scored three runs for Centennial.

Rancho Rams eliminated

Reno Knights (10) vs. Liberty Patriots (5)

The Patriots struck first scoring two in the bottom of the first inning, but Reno came roaring back with five in the top of the second. Each team scored in the fourth and Reno again in the fifth. Starting pitchers, ’19 John Kane (Knights) and ’21 Travis Farrell (Patriots) struggled at the outset and each team used four hurlers in total. The Patriots’ ’20 Derek Brogan, ’21 Jack Hale, and ’21 Chase Gallegos each had two hits and Hale had 2 RBI. The Knights were led offensively by ’19 Garret Damico and ’20 Gunner Gouldsmith with three hits. ’20 Patrick Barry had a pair of hits as well and the three Knights combined for 6 RBI. ’20 Donovan Ratfield earned the final four outs in relief for Reno.

Las Vegas Patriots eliminated

Southern Nevada Tribe (6) vs. Las Vegas Aces (5)

The Tribe scored first with two runs in the first and two runs in third, staking themselves to 4-0 lead through four innings of play.  Tribe starter, ’18 Nick Thompson (CSN) pitched well but found himself in a bit of trouble in the 5th, surrendering the lead, giving up 5 runs. Thompson threw 6.1 in total, striking out nine and walking just one. The undersized right hander competed admirably and was rewarded when the tribe tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, 5-5. The tribe squandered an opportunity in the 7th to walk it off, but typical of the Tribe magic of the previous day, loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. ’19 Josh Sharman appeared to have pitched out of the jam with a two-out ground ball by ’19 Kyle Turner. Aces second baseman, ’19 Zac Czerniawski flipped the ball to shortstop, ’20 Colby Smith, covering the base and the ball inadvertently fell to the ground allowing the winning run to cross in walk-off fashion. ’21 Jacob Walsh had two hits for the Aces while ’18 Christian Rivero and ’19 Kyle Turner had multiple hits for the Tribe.
