Andrean Survives two Games to Advance

Wheatfield, IN- Every team has a scare game on there way to a State Title. Andrean vs. Kankakee Valley looked like that game for Andrean. But like most good teams Andrean found a way to win. Nick Podkul was the hero of the game when he deliver a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh to win 4-3.

Game two, was not a scare game. Hanover Central gave Andrean everything they wanted. Hanover Central defeated Knox 13-3 in the first game behind Dan Stum’s monster game. The senior went 4-5 with a double and a triple, 5 RBI, and 3 runs scored.

Andrean scored a run early to take a short lived lead as Hanover Central responded with a run of it’s own in the second.

The third inning saw the rain pick up and become a steady rainfall, and both pitchers seemed to be bothered by it. Georgia Tech commit, Zac Ryan (Andrean) walked the first two hitters of the inning and then fielded a sac bunt attempt and threw it away wildly. Hanover Central was able to take advantage of the Andrean miscues and scored 4 in the bottom of the third.  Tyler Scott delivered with a two run single to help key Hanover’s offensive attack.

The lead however was short lived. Andrean came in roaring back in the top of the fourth with four runs of their own. Hanover Central returned the favor and threw away a bunt to score the first run. Alex Vode, Donovan Chandler, and Zac Ryan each added an RBI in the inning.

Andrean could not carry the momentum to the field however, Hanover Central quickly scored another run in bottom of the inning on a wild pitch to make the score 6-5. Zac Ryan seemed to settle down after the wild pitch and that would be all the offense Hanover Central could produce the rest of the game.

Ryan continued to be the offensive hero when he stepped to the plate with two outs and ripped an RBI triple off the top of the fence in right field. It missed beign a homerun by a foot. Ryan would eventually be stranded at third with the score tied at 6-6.

Andrean would take over control of the game in the eighth inning. Zac Ryan again, this time Ryan walks and steals second. The throw beat him but the second baseman was unable to hold on to the ball. With two outs, 2015 shortstop Nick Podkul drills a ball to right center to score Ryan and seize control 7-6.

Hanover Central would threaten again in the 8th loading the bases, but Zac Ryan collected his 9th strikeout on the day to end the game.

Andrean advances to the regional next Saturday at Plymouth where they will play Griffith at 1pm.
