Nonconference

No. 1 Mount Carmel (20-0) rallied past Benet Academy 2-1 in the opening game of the 2012 Southside Conference Challenge at Standard Bank Stadium. Caravan junior 2B Justin Martinez hit a 3-2 pitch for an RBI single to tie things up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. Later in the inning junior RF Justin Sanchez coaxed a walk with the bases loaded to force in the eventual game-winner.

Caravan junior LHP Austin Dodson (1-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing just two hits and an unearned run to get the win in his first start of the season. Caravan ace Tyler Laurish retired the final Redwing hitter to nail down his first save of the year. Laurish (6-0) will face red-hot Brother Rice (14-5) on Saturday at Rice in Catholic Blue action.

No. 2 St. Laurence (20-1-1) put the Chicago Catholic League up 2-0 over the

East Suburban Catholic Conference in the 2012 Southside Conference Challenge with a 2-0 victory over the hosts from Marist (14-5). Viking sophomore RHP Mike Kornacker (5-0) scattered seven hits and shut out the hard-hitting Redhawks.

St. Laurence picked up an unearned run in the fourth and in the seventh Viking senior 1B Brandon Mallder doubled home a huge insurance run for Kornacker and the Vikings.

The Vikings will travel to Tom Dedin Field at Providence (14-4) in New Lenox for a huge Catholic Blue battle on Saturday at 11. The PBR’s Executive Director Sean Duncan will be in New Lenox for all of the action.

Chatham Glenwood (13-6) defeated Morton 7-3 in the first game of a twi-nighter at Morton. The win was No. 700 in the illustrious career of Chatham Glenwood head coach Pat Moomey. Morton (15-4) denied Moomey of No. 701 with a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

Central Suburban South

Maine South (14-3; 5-0) hammered Waukegan 11-3 behind University of Iowa-bound C Jimmy Frankos. The future Hawkeye catcher had two hits and two RBI for the CSL-South leaders.

Fox Valley Crossovers

Prairie Ridge (13-5; 5-1 Fox) slipped past Huntley 4-3. Junior Jordan Getzelman went deep with two on to lead the Wolves past the Red Raiders.

Fox Valley Valley

Cary-Grove (13-6; 7-0 Valley) defeated Crystal Lake South 4-2 behind Trojan

Ryan Kaveney (6-0). Kaveney fired a three hitter with seven strikeouts at the Gators. Junior Danny Vilardo had two hits and plated a Trojan run. Crystal Lake South’s (13-7, 4-3 Valley) Jordan Van Dyck (6-1) suffered his first defeat on the mound for CLS.

Interstate 8 Crossover

Herscher (19-4; 5-1 South) defeated Plano 7-2 behind NIU-Bound Jordan Ruckman (3-0). Ruckman fanned 10 Reaper hitters as the Tigers take over the penthouse in the I-8 South. Tiger junior Dalton Sproul was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Wilmington (11-8; 5-2 South) defeated Seneca 5-2 behind Wildcat Brennan Ryan who had three hits, including a homer and had three RBI to dispatch the Irish.

Jackie Robinson North

Clemente (11-1-1, 5-0) crushed Von Steuben 13-4 behind Wildcat junior co-captain Jeremiah Figueroa, who doubled four times and plated five Clemente runs.

Sophomore Anthony Justiniano picked up the win for the JR-North co-leaders.

Jackie Robinson South

No.13 Simeon (14-5; 4-1) smashed Curie 9-3. Sophomore Darius Day had three hits and plated two Wolverine runs. Louisville-recruit Corey Ray had a pair of hits and drove in two for the JR-South leaders.

Mid-Suburban Crossovers

Barrington (14-5; 4-2 West) defeated Wheeling 5-1 behind two-hit, two-RBI day by junior Ryan Lidge and three ribbies from senior Frank Waliczek. Senior Max Redpath fired a three-hitter at the Wildcats.

Fremd (11-7; 4-2 West) hammered MSL-East leader Elk Grove 11-3 on Friday.

Viking Tim Polak had three hits and three RBI for Fremd. Elk Grove falls to (12-6; 4-2 East).

Nonconference

Lockport (11-7) stunned No. 10 Joliet Catholic Academy 3-1 behind a four-hitter from Porter junior Evan Martens (3-2). Martens battery-mate junior C Derek Bangert, had two hits and drove in a big Porter run. JCA falls to 12-4-1.

Oak Forest (15-4) stopped No. 17 Lincoln-Way North 2-0 behind a two-hit, 15-strikeout performance from Louisville-bound RHP Kyle Funkhouser (4-1). Senior Jason Hine drove home one of the two OF runs to give Funkhouser the only run he would need. Lincoln-Way North falls to 14-5.

Aurora Christian (13-5) bombed Newark 14-0 in five innings. Eagle Zach Calemos fired a five-inning no-hitter at the Norsemen. Seniors Kenny McCracken and Josh Haugen had two hits and two RBI for the Eagles.

Plainfield South (13-8) slipped past Waubonsie Valley 5-4. Junior Mike Crowl picked up the win for the Cougars on the mound.
