Catholic Blue Crossovers

No. 1 St. Laurence (14-1; 4-0 Blue) won its Catholic League crossover game at Gordon Tech 6-3 on Saturday morning. Viking SS Joel Rotkvich plated a pair of runs. Viking junior Kevin Smith had two hits including a long home run as the Vikes kept pace with Mt. Carmel and Providence in the Catholic Blue.

Lockport (7-4) waited patiently in Burbank for the Vikings to return from the Northside of Chicago. The Porters welcomed home the Vikings with a little party of their own. Wiping out a 1-0 deficit in the top of the fifth, the Porters exploded for three runs in each of the next three innings to stun the top-ranked Vikings 9-3 in Burbank Saturday evening.

Red-hot Porter junior LF Ron Sessler tripled and singled and drove home a pair of Porter runs. Senior Austin Mastela added three hits and also drove home a pair for the Porters. Porter junior Jeff Pattison and senior Adam Hildebold each had two RBI. Last but not least, Porter junior Doug Matthews, whom I apologize for calling Dave, joined the 16-hit Porter attack with three of his own.

No. 2 Mount Carmel (14-0; 4-0 Blue) routed Bishop McNamara 9-1 behind senior RHP TJ Laurish (6-0). Laurish fired a two-hitter with seven strikeouts at the Fighting Irish. Laurisch’s battery-mate senior C Dan Pappas had three hits and two RBI for MC. Caravan junior Justin Sanchez chipped in with two hits and two RBI.

No.7 Providence (10-3; 4-0 Blue) smashed Fenwick 10-2 on Saturday. Bradley-bound Brady Wilkin homered and doubled for the Celtics. University of Notre Dame-bound LHP Zak Kutsulis (3-1) allowed two runs in six innings to pick up the win. Celtic senior 1B Kevin Tully chipped in with a two-run double.

St. Rita (8-4; 3-1 Blue) smashed St. Joseph 11-4. Louisville-bound Mustang C Zack Soria had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate including a home run and drove home four Mustang runs.

Loyola (5-9; 3-1 Blue) outslugged St. Ignatius 9-7 behind Rambler junior Danny Rafferty, who doubled, singled and plated four Rambler runs.

De La Salle (8-6; 4-2 White) defeated Brother Rice 6-3 behind SIU-bound RHP Anthony Shimkus. Shimkus went the distance for the Meteors, striking out 9 Crusader hitters. Shimkus helped himself with an RBI at the plate. Brother Rice (9-3; 3-1 Blue) suffered its first CCL loss of the season.

Apollo

Effingham (8-3; 3-1) swept Newton 7-0 and 3-2 in eight innings. In game won, senior RHP Tim Gardewine improved to 4-0 with a five-hit shutout. Gardewine struck out 11. Flaming Heart senior 2B Tyler Bushue and junior Drew Levitt had two hits and two RBI to lead the Effingham attack.

In game two, Levitt had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate and Bushue had a single and an RBI. Gardewine chipped in with a pair of hits.

West Suburban Gold

Addison Trail (6-5-1; 2-0) vaulted into the WSC Gold penthouse with a doubleheader sweep of Proviso East on Saturday. The Blazers blanked the Pirates twice, 5-0 and 15-0, in five innings in the nightcap.

Hinsdale South (6-3; 3-2) and Downers Grove South (8-5; 3-2) split their WSC-Gold twin-bill in Darien on Saturday. In game one, Hinsdale South’s Illinois State-bound RHP Sean Beasley (3-0) fired a six-hitter at the Mustangs with six strikeouts as the Hornets rolled 7-0. Hornet senior 3B PJ Schuster doubled, tripled and drove in four Hornet runs. DGS junior Zach Burdi (1-2) suffered the loss.

In game two, DGS turned the tables on the Hornets behind Mustang junior RHP Brian Glowicki (3-1). Golwicki fired a three-hit shutout. Glowicki fanned six Hornet hitters. Mustang sophomore 2B Joe Becht had two hits and two RBI to lead DGS to a 4-0 win in the nightcap.  

West Suburban Silver

York (8-4; 4-1) rolled past Proviso West 10-0 and 14-3 on Saturday. In game one, Duke senior Chris Nesbitt fired a three-hitter at the Panthers with six strikeouts. Duke sophomore Anthony Santos had two doubles and a bomb and drove home four to lead the Duke attack as the Dukes prevailed 10-0 in five innings.

In the nightcap, Santos continued his torrid hitting, plating three more RBI as the Dukes hammered the Panthers 14-3 in five innings. The Dukes put up 11 in the third inning to wrap this one up early. Junior Josh Paperone and senior Mike Trumbull each drove home a pair of Duke runs.

Glenbard West (9-4; 3-2) swept Hinsdale Central 5-3 and 19-8 on Saturday. Game one was the senior Tyler Curtis show for GW. Curtis fired six solid innings at the Red Devils on the mound and had two hits and three RBI to pick up the win. Hilltopper closer junior Dan Simoneit nailed down the save with a scoreless seventh.

Game Two sounded like a football game at Duchon Field in Glen Ellyn. The Hilltoppers defeated the Red Devils 19-8. Hilltopper Myles Purdom had two singles and a double and plated three Hilltopper runs. Junior Dan Setzke doubled twice among his three hits and also drove home three GW runs. Sophomore Hayden Carlson chipped in with a double and two singles for the Hilltoppers.

Western Big 6

Moline (7-2; 2-0) swept away archrival Rock Island 10-0 and 7-4 in a WB6 twin bill on Saturday. Rock Island falls to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in WB6 play.

No. 24 Galesburg (12-3; 1-1) split a twin-bill with East Moline (8-6; 1-1) on Saturday. The Silver Streaks won the first game 3-0 behind a two-hit shutout from senior Tim Rossell (4-0). In the second contest, an error led to a 2-1 defeat. Senior Austin Gernant (2-2) was the tough-luck loser.

Nonconference

No. 3 New Trier (5-1) defeated Prospect 4-2 behind junior Eric Coletto, who drove home the eventual game-winner in a three run Trevian sixth. Northwestern-bound Josh Perlmutter was 3-for-3 and senior C Chris Hall plated a pair with a two-run bomb for NT. Senior LHP Nick Hedge (3-0) allowed a run and six hits in his solid performance for NT. Hedge struck out six.

New Trier will host Highland Park on Tuesday at Duke Childs in a Central Suburban crossover game at 4:30. The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be doing the play-by-play of the LIVE broadcast on

No. 4 Oak Park (9-1) crushed Leyden 8-2 in a WSC crossover game on Saturday. Seton Hall-bound LHP Zach Weigel allowed two hits in his solid 5 1/3 inning performance to improve to 3-0 on the mound for the Huskies. Weigel’s battery-mate, Purdue-bound Jack Picchiotti, and sophomore Alex Rice, each drove home a pair of OPRF runs. Weigel had a two-hit afternoon at the plate.

No. 5 Plainfield North (9-1) crushed Joliet Central 13-3 in five innings. Juniors Ricky Johnson (3 RBI) and SS Kurt Palandech (2 RBI) led the assault on the Steelmen.

No. 6 Minooka (8-5) continued its slide on Saturday by getting blasted by Sandburg 11-4. Sandburg improves to 7-2-1 with the victory.

No. 8 Andrew (9-3) hammered Reavis 11-0 in five innings behind a 4-for-4 afternoon for Steve Carrabotta. The senior T-Bolt had 4 RBI in his perfect afternoon. Junior starting pitcher Kevin Walsh threw a four-hit shutout at the Rams.

No.10 Nazareth Academy (11-0) shut out Riverside-Brookfield 4-0 on Saturday. Miami of Ohio-bound Ryan Marske (2-0) fired a three-hit shutout at the Bulldogs with 11 strikeouts. In Marske’s last 14 innings pitched, the Roadrunner lefty has allowed no-runs, six hits, with 22 strikeouts. Marske’s battery-mate junior C Mike Stromberg had a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate. Roadrunner senior Sean Maloney chipped in with a pair of hits and drove home a Roadrunner run.

No. 14 Alton (11-2) beat Quincy Notre Dame 11-1 and then defeated the hosts from Carrollton 1-0.

No. 15 Edwardsville (9-2) blasted Parkway West 13-4.

No. 16 Mundelein (13-2) beat Evanston 1-0 on Saturday. Mustang Brian Weiner did it all for Mundelein. Weiner fired 6 2/3 shutout innings at the Wildkits and drove in the winning-run with a long homer.

No. 19 Benton (13-3) fell 7-6 to Farina South Central in the RBI tourney in Benton. Ranger Beau Gibbs hit a three-run shot for Benton. Farina South Central scored twice in the top of the seventh to stun the Rangers 7-6. Ranger senior Cody Smith chipped in with three hits and four RBI.

The Rangers bounced back in their second game of the day crushing East Central 17-5. The Rangers were led by senior C Trey Garrett who had a 4-for-5 day with 5 RBI.  

No. 20 Oak Forest (7-3) defeated Lincoln-Way East behind Louisville-bound RHP Kyle Funkhouser (3-1). Funkhouser fanned 11 in his six innings of work on Saturday. Bengal sophomore 1B Brian Richard had two hits and two RBI.

No. 22 Lincoln-Way North (9-2) slid past TF South 3-1 behind a one-hitter from junior Josh Reid (2-0). Junior Alex Neufeld singled home the lead run for the Phoenix.

No. 23 Niles West (11-1) crushed Ridgewood 12-2 in five innings on Saturday. Wolves Eric Stojananoff hit not one, but two, three-run homers to lead NW past Ridgewood.

No. 25 Bloomington (11-3) slit a twin-bill with East Peoria. The Purple Raiders won the opener 19-3 behind the Mardis brothers, who each had two hits and drove in three runs. Raider senior Jack Cerny (5-0) went the distance for the win. East Peoria ripped the Raiders in the nightcap 7-1. Purple Raider all-time hit leader Curtis Wiese had three hits in the nightcap.

Glenbrook South (8-3) outslugged St. Patrick 9-7 behind a 13-strikeout performance from Titan junior LHP Kyle Pauley.

Glenbrook North (8-4) beat Conant 8-3 behind a big three-RBI game from Spartan senior SS Brad Ruchman.

Maine South (7-3) defeated Fremd 5-3, behind University of Notre Dame-bound Kyle Richardson. The future Fighting Irish CF had two doubles and an RBI for the Hawks.

O’Fallon (9-5) scored in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Normal West 5-4. NIU-bound Wes Sery had two hits and two RBI to lead the Wildcats. Wildcat junior C Adam McGinnis chipped in with three hits. Normal West falls to 10-4.

Lincoln-Way Central (9-3) defeated Normal Community 8-7 and then blanked Richards 10-0 in five innings. In game one against Normal, Knight senior 1B Greg Wymar had three hits and drove home three Knight runs. Junior Tommy Charles had a pair of doubles and two RBI.

McHenry (9-4) beat Lake Zurich 6-4 behind junior Devon Grekhe (2-0), who fired two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. Warrior senior Alex Obenauf led the Warrior attack with two hits and two RBI. Lake Zurich (10-3) was led Ball State-bound Sean Eder, who drove in three Bear runs.

Champaign Centennial (11-2) slipped past Mahomet-Seymour 4-3 and the lost the nightcap 9-6 to the Bulldogs,

Ottawa (8-4) defeated Yorkville 3-2 in nine thrilling innings on Saturday. The game between the Pirates and Foxes may have been a preview of the Class 3A Yorkville regional championship. Ottawa received seven solid innings from Pirate junior starter Jonah Morris. The Pirate attack was led by Buddy Ahlstrom who had a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon.

Ottawa’s junior SS Miguel Hermosillo, who is ranked 24th in the Class of 2013, arrived in the top of the eighth. Hermosillo danced home with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded HBP. Hermosillo, who is also one of the top football prospects in Illinois, was starring at the Nike Midwest Football Combine. Ripping off a 4.52 forty at the combine and then raced all the way to OTHS, to score the game-winning run.

Manteno (14-1) crushed Cissna Park 12-3 and 7-2 in a nonconference twin-bill on Saturday. In game one senior RHP J.J. Witherow (1-0) fired a three-hitter at the Timberwolves. Panther senior Joey DiLeo, junior Ryan Sample, and senior Billy Liss each had two hits. DiLeo had a pair of double and Liss hammered a triple.

In the game-two Panther win Judson College-bound Mark Reardanz had a pair of hits including a double. The fleet-footed Witherow hit a pair of triples.

Naperville Central (5-4) struck late and ripped Stevenson 9-2 on Saturday. The Redhawks exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth erasing a 1-0 Patriot lead and cruised to a seven-run victory.

Redhawk senior SS Nick Ryan had a huge triple and drove home a pair for the Redhawks. Bryce Kirk hammed a solo shot for the ‘Hawks and senior Ian Lewandowski chipped in with a pair of hits and an RBI. Redhawk starting pitcher Zach Aranoff picked up the win.

On Monday, the PBR’s Drake Skleba will be in Naperville for the Redhawks DVC opener with Glenbard East.

Stevenson (6-4) picked up an RBI from the Patriots University of Illinois-bound SS Adam Walton and 1B Joe Savarise.

Barrington (8-3) hammered Whitney Young 13-3 in five innings. Bronco junior Macray Poidomani went deep with a pair of Broncos on base for the big blow for Barrington. Bronco senior John Rogers went the distance for Barrington.

Hersey (7-1) defeated St. Viator 5-1 behind a one-hitter from Hersey Dartmouth-bound Matt Danielak (3-0). Huskie senior CF Trevor Haas and junior C Josh Kootnik had a pair of RBI for Hersey.  Danielak had eight strikeouts and helped himself with an RBI at the plate.

Oak Lawn (7-5) defeated Benet Academy 3-2 on Saturday. Spartan sophomore Mike Dunne (1-0) threw a five-hitter at the Redwings. Spartan senior Kyle Smith doubled home a Spartan run and junior Chris Rafacz singled and walked and plated a Spartan run. Senior Mike Yacko had two hits and scored a run for OLCHS.

Chicago Taft (14-0) swept a twin-bill from Chicago Bulls Academy 16-1 in five innings and 14-10 in the nightcap. Eagle junior Alex Rodriguez drove home three for Taft in the game one romp.

Burlington Central (8-5) defeated Crystal Lake South 3-2 behind a seven-hitter from senior Riley Jensen, who improved to 4-0 on the mound. Crystal Lake South falls to 9-5.

Riverton (12-1) defeated Downs Tri-County 7-2 and 29-2 in five innings. Hawk junior John Debowey went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer and drove home three Riverton runs.

In the nightcap Debowey was 6-for-6 with two homers and drove in nine for the Hawks.
