ASHWAUBENON, WI - No. 5 seed Ashwaubenon opened up their postseason campaign with an emphatic 8-0 win over No. 12 seed Green Bay Southwest at scenic Ashwaubomay Park on Tuesday afternoon to advance to the regional finals.

The Trojans were facing an uphill battle all game long. They were winless in the regular season and had already lost to the Jaguars twice this season.

The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead over the Trojans and never looked back. Zak Imig banged a two RBI double to left field in the bottom of the first inning to give Ashwaubenon a 2-0 lead. Turner Wittig doubled in a run of his own in the second to make the score 3-0.

The Trojans went with a pitching committee in an attempt to stifle the Jaguars’ bats, but to no avail. Lucas Steffes, Dustin Armstrong, and Daniel Case all had stints on the mound in the first three innings, but were unable to stop Ashwaubenon from taking a 3-0 lead and beyond.

A four run outburst by the Jaguars in the fourth inning put the game out of reach. They bashed five hits in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles by Imig and Tyler Cox. Chase Kupsh also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the frame.

After that point, both teams started putting their reserves in the game to finish things up.

Southwest was unable to get anything going offensively for most of the game. Wittig started the game on the mound for Ashwaubenon and only surrendered two hits during his five innings of work while striking out four. Mitch Powers came in to relieve him in the sixth and struck out the side in both innings he pitched. The Trojans only tallied five baserunners throughout the entire game, and two of their three hits came from a swinging bunt and a bunt for a hit.

Steffes and Case combined to pitch 4.2 innings and surrendered eight runs, six of which were earned.

Imig finished the game 3-for-3 for Ashwaubenon with two doubles and four RBIs. Armstrong went 1-for-2 for Southwest.

Ashwaubenon will face No. 4 seed Wausau West in Wausau on Thursday in the regional final for the right to go to sectionals. Southwest’s season ended with a record of 0-23.
