Austin Cutchal Carries on Genoa Central Tradition

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Austin Cutchal signed with Texas A&M at Texarkana, Wednesday February 4th, 2015. This is a historical event due to the fact Cutchal is the first signee for the colleges inaugural recruiting class. He is a middle infielder from Genoa Central High School. As a junior he hit .387 with 13 RBI and scored 41 runs, and an all-conference selection.
Although Cutchal is the first signee for Texas A&M at Texarkana, he joins the list of 10 signees since 2010 from Genoa Central. This is an impressive number for a school with small enrollment numbers. This year Genoa Central has 258 students in grades 9-12 with 68 students in the 2015 graduating class. This small community outside of Texarkana has won 2 of the last 3 class 3A state titles, and seven consecutive conference titles. In 2012 the Dragons went 31-1 winning the state championship, in 2013 their record was 28-3 and lost in the state semi-finals to Harding Academy, and in 2014 their record was 31-2 defeating Fordyce in the finals.
The 2015 class has two other signees with Cale Riddling signing in November with Arkansas at Little Rock and Garrett Huff signing with Arkansas State. Riddling, is a power left-handed hitting corner infielder that hit .452 with 25 RBI’s and 6 HR’s as a junior. Huff is a fleet footed middle infielder that hit .437, 50 runs, and 36 stolen bases. Add Cutchal to the mix and they should have a dynamic offense. Their top area of concern will be on the mound where they look to replace Dylan Drabble RHP (Central Arkansas). Fortunately for Coach Brewster the stable looks to be full with a duo of right handers in Justin Swecker (2016) and Tyler Moreland (2017) in addition to Ridling who was 3-0 with 1.37 ERA as junior. If the young arms can handle the load I will not be surprised if the Genoa is in the hunt again this year. Challengers for the title could come from Smackover or Harding Academy.
