First baseman Brady Harju stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning and with one strike, lined a double deep into left field, scoring Bobby Novack (who was a courtesy runner for Tyler Solomon) for the game’s only run Thursday as visiting Battlefield defeated Hylton 1-0 in both teams’ season opener.

Tyler Solomon got on base following a single. He finished the night going 2 for 3 with a double. Harju was 2 for 3 as well with a double.

It was Hylton’s first loss at home in 14 straight games and marked the third straight game between these two teams that was decided by one run.

Hylton junior Trey Shepard went four innings, gave up no runs, two hits, walked two and struck out seven. Fox Semones came on in relief of Shepard, throwing the last three innings, also pitching well. In those three innings, Semones gave up two hits, one earned run, no walks and struck out one. Semones took the loss for the Bulldogs.

For Battlefield, Jake Agnos started and pitched 3 innings, giving up one hit, no runs, walking 5 and striking out 6. Keagan McGinnis relieved Agnos, pitching two innings, walking two and struck out three to get the win. Colin Brown came in to close the game. Brown pitched two innings, gave up no hits, walked four and struck out three to get the save.

With the Battlefield pitching staff struggling most of the night (the Bobcats walked 10 Hylton batters), the Bulldogs could not capitalize and push across runners. Hylton left 13 on base, 7 of them were in scoring position. The Hylton hitting only managed two hits, with a single by Semones and a double by senior Stephen Johnston.

Although Battlefield struggled to find the strike zone, they were able to get strikeouts when they needed it, striking out 12 Bulldog hitters.
