BRIGHT FUTURES FOR CORONADO AND GORMAN

Buddy Gouldsmiht
Nevada Scouting Director

CORONADO HS – At nine am this morning with the dew still glistening off the freshly over-seeded grass, Rich Santigate and his Coronado Cougars welcomed the Bishop Gorman Knights.  The lineups would read like a “who is who” of future performers.  There was a smattering of upperclassman but this day would belong to the underclassman.  Each team featuring a number of freshman and sophomore players getting an opportunity to showcase their abilities. Although the day was dominated by up and coming young players, we will start with one 2020 that caught our eye.

Cole Parker, SS, Bishop Gorman, 2020

Parker is an evenly proportioned, sturdy bodied middle infielder with solid infield actions. He showed efficient right over left footwork with a quick exchange. He displayed the ability to throw from more than one angle.  His footwork and ability to play through the ball lent carry to his throws.  A left-handed hitter, he showed patience at the plate.  He played all out, giving his best effort at each opportunity.

Jarrett Kenyon, SS/RHP, Coronado, 2021

Lean, 5-foot-10, 140, Kenyon has a lean athletic frame. He started on the mound throwing a fastball from a ¾ slot 74-77 with arm side run and occasional sink.  His breaking ball was slurvy at 65-67.  Kenyon is a projectable athlete that fielded his position well and will undoubtedly see his velocity jump with strength and weight increases.  After his outing on the mound, he played shortstop and was equally athletic.  At the plate, he maintained an aggressive middle of the field approach.

Kyle Kiernan, SS/RHP, Coronado, 2022

Maturing, 5-foot-8, 135, Kiernan is still developing physically but maintains solid infield actions with a feel for the game. He displayed a simple approach at the plate, resulting in consistent quality contact. His size and strength lend to second base presently but it is easy to see him at shortstop down the line.

Tommy Rose, OF, Bishop Gorman, 2022

Rose is a projectable high-waisted athlete. He was selectively aggressive at the plate, making quality contact. A left-handed hitter, he was 4.38 on a groundball base hit that held him in the box and ran well underway. He employs a subtle rhythmic load with a fairly fluid swing.  Another in a line of youthful Knights that with size and strength increases will be forces in the future.

Julian Molto-Herrera, 3B, Bishop Gorman, 2021

Molto-Herrera has a sturdy and durable body with present strength.  He showed plenty of arm for the position, making plays to his right and left.  Molto-Herrera struck the ball with authority at the plate and it is easy to see potential power down the line.

Peyton Riske, RHP, Bishop Gorman, 2022

Developing, 5-8, 115, Riske has a ton of life in his body.  His loose ¾ arm action and solid delivery accompanied by his feel to pitch were impressive. He pounded the bottom of the zone with a fastball and changeup mix, making quick work of the opposing hitters to close out the game.
