Hungate’s Pitching Leads Abingdon in 3D Semifinals

Chase Hungate's complete game shutout of the Staunton River Golden Eagles propelled the Abingdon Falcons to a 1-0 victory in the Class 3 Region D Semifinals on Thursday afternoon.

The Falcons took advantage of some Staunton River miscues in the first inning to get what would be the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Luke Francisco reached base via an infield error. After a fly out and strikeout in which Francisco would advance to second on another error, he would score on a two out infield error yet again to cross and get the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

That would be all that was needed from the Falcons with Hungate on the mound. The 2021 sidearm thrower pumped the strikezone throughout the game and kept the Golden Eagles at bay throughout, scattering four hits in the contest with nine strikeouts and no free bases. Hungate was able to pitch around two Staunton River hits in the seventh inning by striking out the side to thwart the best threat that the Golden Eagles had in the contest.

Tanner Barrs had the only hit of the game for the Falcons.

Eddie Blake got the hard luck loss for Staunton River, giving up the lone unearned run in the contest in the first. He went four innings on the mound giving up one hit and striking out three. Collin Bates threw two scoreless inning in relief. Jared Mahew and Aidan Brown led Staunton River, both going 2-for-3 on the day.

Lord Botetourt Bats Propel Cavs to 3D Final

Three solo homeruns from the bottom of the order and a stellar pitching performance from Brae Farrell and Jared Arnholt led the Lord Botetourt Cavaliers over the Christiansburg Blue Demons 5-2.

Botetourt was able to jump out to an early 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when hitter Arnholt hit a solohomerun off Christiansburg starter Brady Kirtner in the top of the second. Dylan Fralin would then lead off the top of the third with a solo shot of his own to extend the lead to 2-0. Connor Fuhrman (South Carolina) would add an RBI single in the frame and Botetourt would add one more run after Fuhrman stole second and the throw would deflect into the infield allowing a runner on third to score, making the score 4-0.

Carson Peggins then hit a solo homerun of his own in the top of the fourth to extend the Botetourt run total to five.

Christiansburg would add a run in the bottom of the third from a Reagan Harris RBI and another in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun from Zalen Akers.

The Cavs got solid pitching from Farrell and Arnholt. Farrell started the game and went four innings scattering two hits while striking out nine and conceding six walks. Arnholt pitched well in relief, going three innings, giving up two hits a run while striking out five.
