Class 4A Rockford Riverhawks Super-Sectional

(In Bracket Order)

Grant (24-11) ended the coaching career of Schaumburg’s Paul Groot as the Bulldogs defeated Schaumburg 7-0 behind Bulldog ace Jared Helmich (11-1).

Helmich fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts at the Saxons. Bulldog junior Brent Spohr had two hits and two RBI to lead the unlikely Bulldogs to Joliet.

Groot retires after 34 years at Schaumburg. His 1997 Saxons defeated Lockport 5-4 in nine innings in one of the greatest Class AA championship games of all-time. Groot’s 1987 squad fell 3-2 to Harrisburg to finish second in Class AA.

Class 4A Rockford Riverhawks Super-Sectional 2

Oak Park (30-9-1) made the clock strike midnight on Cinderella Highland Park’s (20-20) dreams of winning the Class 4A state championship, edging the Giants 1-0 on Monday.

Huskie junior 1B Nick Kowalczuk’s one-out double plated Seton Hall-bound LHP Zack Weigel (7-1) with the only run of the game. Weigel fired a three-hitter at the surprising Giants.

Class 4A Standard Bank Super-Sectional

Lyons Township (26-12-1) defeated Marist 3-2. (See Drake Skleba’s story).

Class 4A University of Illinois Super-Sectional

Minooka (27-13) defeated Naperville Central 6-3 behind the booming bats of junior Joe Carnagio and Austin Polcyn. Both Indians had two hits and two RBI to lead the Indian attack.

In the four-run fifth inning Indian uprising, Polcyn plated a run with a double and Carnagio followed with a clutch two-run double, busting open the game.

Bellarmine University-Bound LHP Josh Jiminez (11-2) fired a seven-hitter at the Redhawks

Class 3A Sauget (GCS Park) Super-Sectional

Troy-Triad (32-8) crushed Danville 13-4. Knight senior Ty Lewis (10-1) picked up the win as the Knights pounded out 15 hits. Knight senior Andrew Range had four hits and plated a pair for Triad. Senior catcher Dylan Johnson hit a three-run bomb and drove home four. Junior Keaton Wright chipped in with three hits and

Troy Weiesemeyer had a booming two-run double.

Class 3A Augustana College Super-Sectional

The La Salle-Peru (33-6) head coach Bill Booker 2012 Final Tour will be in Joliet on Friday. On Monday night Booker’s Cavaliers took a short bus ride to Rock Island and dispatched of Burlington Central 10-1, to punch their ticket to the Class 3A Final 4 match-up with Troy-Triad (32-8) at 10 on Friday morning.

Cavalier sophomore RHP Noah Lamboley (10-1) went the distance for L-P. Cavalier Casey Huebe had two hits and 4 RBI to lead the L-P attack. Red-hot Adam Happ had two-hits and two RBI. Western Iowa University-bound Cavalier C Casey Booker chipped in with three hits.

Class 3A North Central College Super-Sectional

Nazareth (30-9) romped past Grayslake Central 7-2 behind Roadrunner ace LHP Dom Purpura (8-1) and return to Joliet for the second consecutive year. Purpura fired a six-hitter at Grayslake Central (30-10). Roadrunner senior Mark Perrone had three hits and three RBI to lead the Roadrunner attack.

The Roadrunners will meet East Suburban Catholic Conference brother Marian Catholic on Friday in a Class 3A semifinal. Marian Catholic (23-17) slipped past Simeon 1-0 in eight innings.
